Seen something yesterday about him saying that it would not become a pron site. I think he's being a dick in all honesty.

Err....

I don't get it? So a guy owns a website with the popes name...and?

Explanations accepted.

Desperate wannabe journalists everywhere rush to write about it.

Only folks that give a shit are the wannabes and the religious nutters that'll no doubt be offended by it.

the point being that he wanted to register all possible pope names before the cardinals chose a new bloke. a rather unsubtle effort in his case if you ask me.

good work that man, he bought it, the domain is his. If the catholics abhor technology so much they dont like condoms they can fucking well stop using the internet, any pope with a website should be forced to stop having sex with young boys to teach him a lesson!

Sympathy requires a valid reason. I dont see 1 in this thread ;)

As for the possible porn site at that address, its possible but unlikely. The address details used to register that site are also related to 70-odd other businesses. The majority of them, surprisingly enough, also sound like scams.

Of course the 2minutes of "investigation" required to find that out is far beyond the skill level of your average web journalist, thus the content-free ananova link above ;)

Of course the press all over the world will be going mad about this and of course all the religous zealots will go stark raving mad and try to sue him or something.

People trying to enforce their values on the rest of the world piss me off tbh.

He spent the money, its his website, anyone who thinks that making a big deal over it will change anything needs a kick in the head. :p

well, I'm not particularly indignated (eep is that a word?) about the registering of every possible popename™ before the next guy got installed. my point is that the bloke in question isn't being particularly bright because he stands to gain exactly nothing from it and that irks me. the pope will use the vatican central website for everything, period.

you see, something like registering "harrypotter.com" when your name actually is Harry P. and then fighting off whatsername Rowling would gain a grudging nod from me, but registering "mikrosoft.com" and pointing it to either some dodgy register, a pron site or a domain park or all three just makes me a bit sad tbh.

A bit like the story of Mike Rowe who got hounded by MS after he namde his site MikeRoweSoft?

aye, well, a bit, yeah. it worries me slightly that poeple working at microsoft actually have to check such matters. though, in the case of Mike Rowe he may well have had a better case if he'd called his domain "mikerowesoftware" or something.

my personal beef with silly registrars on the interweb is that the mis-spelling of just about every big brand's webby will take you somewhere you don't particularly want to be. ah well, maybe it's just me :)

lol, yeah that would be the next thing hehe :) also I think pennyarcade did a strip on ...ooh I think it was EA having people employed purely to surf the web looking for people using their stuff without permission. ah well, emulation is the highest form of flattery I always thought :)
