Hi, well i'm going to buy some more ram today since my new 128 super speed ram doesn't quite do the job, so how do i know what type of ram my PC will take?
The current ram thats in there doesn't tell you on a sticker or anywhere what type it is. It's a silver casing, small. What else can i say? Is there someway i can find out what ram my PC will take? thanks

You know what Motherboard you have in it?

Unfortunatly no. Just found out its DDR2 because it has two slits underneath that're close together in the centre, and its 800mhz :)

So basically you need two matched DIMM's of DDR2 RAM. Thought DDR2 was 400 Mhz. If you want top of the range try these or something similar:

Crucial Balistix - very fast

Or use the Corsair Equivalents

If you want to go cheaper (1Gb instead of 2Gb) just make sure they are a matched pair. Shop around on the Net. Dabs are good but not always the cheapest.

Sorry mate no.

Intel screwed up royally when they intoduced the P4 and tied it to RDRAM. It's fast, but too bloody expensive.

There is hope however.

1024Mb (2 x 512Mb) of RDRAM will cost around £250.
Your old machine is worth approximately £100.

For around £50 more you can build yourself a decent Athlon 64 3000, 1024MB ram, 160GB SATA HD, 16x DL Lightscribe DVD Writer & 128MB Geforce 6600GT from Dabs.com ;P

You might be better off just ordering new stuff from Dabs. PC World dont have the greatest prices or selection of decent stuff. Plenty of good AMD boards for less than 70 GBP. Keep to a good known make.

Ditch the RAMBUS shit, Intel did! ;-)

Nope.

You need:

A new motherboard (to take new ram)
A new processor (old one won't go in new motherboard)
New ram (that's what started this :p)

So you may as well go the whole hog and get a new PC, cos yours is old enough that any transplanted parts will probably slow the new machine down.

1.3Ghz P4 info - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_4#Willamette

If you can afford it (or don't mind credit and are old enough) Dell are doing a stupidly priced system at the moment.

http://configure.euro.dell.com/dell...5515&rbc=D05515&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsrsdimen_5150_3

Remove the warranty option (go for basic collect and return) and the whole lot is £549 delivered.

Dual core 2.8Ghz P4
1024 DDR2 memory
250Gb Hard disk
16 x DVD Writer
19" Dell TFT

Graphics card is a bit poor but it does have PCI-Express so you can upgrade later.

Unless you get offered 1Gb of DDR2 for around £60-£80 your machine is on it's deathbed as far as gaming is concerned.

Sorry

I used to work at PC World and here's some basic advice.

1 - Talk to the techs at the helpdesk - sales/manager don't know **** all about PC components.

2 - The service agreement is only any good if you buy a laptop - home PCs are covered under house insurance (and if a computer is gonna drop dead it does in the first 12 months)

3 - Hmm

4 - Hmm

5 - Hmm

6 - Hmm

7 - Hmm

8 - Hmm

9 - Oh yeah....shop at Dabs.com or some other internet site, as no service is better than the sh*t one you get at all PC World stores except for Boston. :)
