I seem to have great difficulty connecting to BW servers with mine.

I think the guys at BW refuse to keep the string taut.

If you stick a piece of chewing gum on the string where it meets the tin can, it should help.

What you need is a good stong peice of fishing gut, i find that does the job. You get vandals cutting the connection sometimes though, so watch out for that.

You are using a top quality tin can (Heinz ones are pretty effective), as oppossed to a Plastic drinks cup arn't you. ?
