Tv-out

Having been impressed with it with my laptop. I want to try it out on my desktop.

Thing is I don't know which lead to get, there is a s-video output on my gfx card, and I've also got a converter to composite I think. The 25" tv I'll be using has s-video, scart and composite inputs.

Which lead do you recommend ? Can I get audio from the tv-out as well. I'd like the sound to come out of my tv speakers, as they're quite good.

Many Thanks.

An S-Video lead will give you your picture on the TV , but you will need to connect your sound card to the TV for sound. If you have composite out on the sound card then happy days, but if you have only a 3.5 jack (eg Audigys) then youll need mess about with adapters.

get a cable from maplins. one end with a 3.5 jack the other end with phono conectors. then you could get a svhs to scart converter to which you conect the phono conectors and svhs cables to an plug it into you telly.

s-video = svhs ?

So I need a s-video to scart lead, and a phono lead from the snd card to the composite audio inputs in my tv?

If that is correct, should I not get a s-video to s-video lead ?(or composite video to s-video lead) as I was under the impression that s-video was better quality than standard scart.

S-Video is picture only, no sound. (SVHS is a type of improved VHS video format which improves picture quality - so the two arent related)

You still need to find some way of connecting your sound card to the TV. Composite to composite is easiest but only if your soundcard has a composite socket.

If it hasnt and your TV has the standard white and red stereo phono (RCA) inputs and your soundcard only has a 3.5 jack then my advice would be to buy a standard twin phono lead and a twin phono to 3.5 jack adapter. This will take care of your sound.

The simplest way to take care of the picture is to buy a simple S-video to S-video lead, assuming the TV has an S-video input.

As Yaka says Maplin or any local electronics store should have these items in stock as its all standard stuff. Alternatively buy online if you want to buy high quality specialist leads ( Not essential unless you are an audiophile)

Good Luck

thanks.. but do I actually need the scart adaptor? Do the signals have to be combined at the TV end?

If you have phono inputs on your tv then no. You would just need the 3.5 mm to phono lead and the s video lead. If you havent then you would need the scart adapter

Cheers Scooba m8 , the only problem now is that I get a black&white screen on the s-video and scart inputs on my tv???

PLEASE NOTE:
The most common problems that users generally face with SCART connector is that they get black & white picture when they connect S-video to their TV SCART connector. The reason for this is usually that the TV is not capable of handlign S-video or is not set to handle S-video-signal from SCART. TV doesn't know by itself if a S-video or standard CVBS input is used. Usually the user needs to inform the TV what signal format is used. If the TV thinks that a normal CVBS input is used, then the picture will be black-and-white because the luminance signal doesn't contain the color information but is the same "format" as CVBS. Most tv's doesn't have automatic detection of which of the two is used so you usually have to tell it that. (like pressing the A/V button twice etc.) The same thing happens if you connect a CVBS source and put the TV in S-video mode.
The problem is I also get b&w screen when I use the straight to s-video connection. and my remote doesn't have a AV button., but ive tried switching between S and AV for the 2nd scart.

1) Make sure the output is in PAL format
2) Make sure your AV connections are set to S mode otherwise you will get grey picture, if you don't know how to do this consult your manual

1) The pal format is UK PAL-I
2) The computer is using s-video out, on my tv I have 1. normal scart, 2. scart that says s-video on it, and 3. s-video. When I put it on no.2 I can change from the electronic menu between AV & S for 2. but the picture remains black & white on S. It makes no sense that I get B&W image on 3. S-video also. And due to the tv being so old I don't have the manual.

I'm beggining to think the TV is knackered, as tube is on it's way out as the aspect ratio changes now and again in normal tv.

Dude

I had this problem & couldnt fix it. It worked in color at first (puter s-vid to scart adapter with sound from the soundcard)...then I believe some part of the scart connector got damaged...and no more color.

Went and exchanged for a new scart adapter (the old scart adapter wouldnt give color when we tried it in the shop !)....the new one gave color..then no color & it never worked in color again. :(

However, with my new tv, I also get the classic B&W S-video problem from my dvd player....this is solved, as you say, by pressing the av again.

*edit tv aint a toshiba is it ?*

Yes it is a Toshiba

shame I haven't got a AV button on my remote.

I makes no sense that s-video w/out scart is black & white.

Do you think composite video would work?

model is 2527DB

By AV button do you mean arrow going into a circle, which is the button I use to cycle thru the extenal inputs like scart, if so I tried that and does nay work.

Thanks Ulysses and others :) I have fixed the problem simply by changing the s-video out on the gfx control panel to composite- out instead.

I tried this because in the troubleshooting section of the manual it said that if you get a black and white picture make sure that you are not using s-vhs. So I put it on scart 1 is the normal scart not selective between s-video and AV. Which I knew wasn't going to work, but then decided to change the setting in the computer as a long shot (I was using s-video out on the gfx card, and selecting composite out made no sense to me) and to my surprise it worked. :D

Watching films on tv is alot more comfortable, the only problem is that the sound is not very loud.
