TV out problems :-( Help needed.

No doubt you people out there will be thinking I've posted in the wrong forum, but i know that so many people view this general one it was worth a shot.

I have a Radeon 7200 card in my computer in the lounge, the plan was to use the tv out on it to view divx films and dvds from the computer's drive etc...

The output on the card is S-Video.

I have an S-video cable from maplin plus another converter that allows composite/audio and svideo input on it, it then converts it to scart. You can chose input/output etc depending on what direction you want it to go to.

When i plug the cables into the pc and into the back of the VCR the computer picks up that there is a connection and allows me to "enable" it. Nothing but a black screen on the tv still with a few lines going across it.

Ive tried using the cable on my own pc with a gf3 ti 200 and a different TV and ive got no signal from that too.

The adaptor works cause the SNES through it into the video scart port works fine. Ive just tried the cable again from the lounge box to the video but all that comes on the screen is a black picture with some moving white interference in the form of lines moving up it.

Any suggestions? Dodgy cable? (a bit unlikely as it picks up a connection) The tv isnt able to understand the signal? Or the VCR isnt? What pal format should I be using? I set the card to "UK and ireland" and it set it to PAL I. If anyone knows any different please dont be afraid to tell me!

Thanks for reading this, hope you can offer some advice.

I know my TV is NTSC, but even when I selected wrong formats it still came up with a picture and the colours were just a bit dodgy.

I got the same scart splitter as you. Worked straight away after I plugged it in so not really sure what the problem is. Got all the right drivers installed? I remember installing some WDM video driver but can't remember if that really changed anything.

Sorry not much use =p

EDIT - Just thought, you get the same result when you unplug the monitor cable and just have the TV plugged in?

update

Er this is an update

I have a picture now, but its black and white.

The strange thing is, if i plug just the s video cable into the scart adaptor, i still get nothing.

If i plug some random composite pins in from my turned off snes while the s-video cable is also in, i get a picture from the pc to the tv. What the hell is going on? Why do i need inputs, that arent even turned on, into the adaptor for it to get any sort of picture?

Also how do i cure it being black and white?

Thanks,

Dime

Oh hmm. I had that problem on my old voodoo 3 3000. As I remember, I faffed and fiddled with cables and settings until it worked... Sorry, that's not much help either. But Macrovision protection had a part to play in screwing up DVD output when I tried to watch them.

I did the same on my parents TV. I plugged a s-video cable into a Scart adapter but the picture only comes out black and white however my TV, that has an actual S-Video socket, has no problem displaying it after I had fiddled with the In and Outs settings on the TV OSD. Other problems with out putting from the computer in refresh/resolution problems since TVs work on lower refresh/res rates.

Thanks for the link, someone else mentioned tv tool.

I think its designed only for geforce cards but i spose there is no harm in trying.

What I actually might resort to is using an old (old being used in the looset term here, acient is probably better) canopus 6mb voodoo with 1 composite output. At least i know that works.

Maybe i'll buy a tv with an s video input or a VCR with one or something. Something else i didnt want to buy though :|

Bloody s video bloody radeon bloody ati arhheghehge

/me mumbles.

TV-out is crap for movies anyway imo.

Spend about a 4:1 ratio of time trying to get it to work right - to enjoying it.

Definately not worth it just for movies, think a dvd player probably work out cheaper and less stressful :)

Sounds like you want it for more then just idle entertainment tho.

Once you have it working though, the 4:1 ratio you speak of becomes irrelevant, because you can sit back and watch DivX/SVCD/DVD/whatever on your TV without needing a DVD player or any extra gubbins (apart from a computer relatively close to the TV). :)

You can pick up a SVHS to Composite adaptor (or I can knock up the specifications for you if you're handy with a soldering iron), never seen them cause the trouble that seems to occur with SVHS to Scart.
