a rather broad thread topic i know, but i didn't know how else to word it(bringing me to write this, cause i dunno what to search on google)

when i watch TV, play games on the TV or computer(with my brother), i turn off the lights, to bring out definition... but recently while watching Bones, my brother started to feel ill, i thought that maybe it was something he ate... anyway, about 5 mins ago he threw up... this got me wondering, could it maybe something to do with the fact the lights are off and the fact that were watching the TV(on the pc) have something to do with it

so my question, is there any scientific proof that watching the tv in darkness cause some people to be ill?

i ask this because, if there was any proof for this, then the health and safety people would be all over cinemas, altering how we watch things on the big screen
or is it something to do with *how* there projectors work?

could be travel sickness, i have trouble playing FPSs due to the fact that the lvl of physics/reality in the games these days seems to be enough to "fool" my brain into believing its moving, but when what the brain thinks, and what my body thinks dont match..i get travel sick.

it tends to be more pronounced if the lights are off (ie im focussed completely on it) and it seems to lesson if i make a concious effort to remove my eyes from the screen for a few seconds every couple of mins.

im just odd..i know. i cant even play Gears of War for long, as i get travel sick ;/

Well, don't think it's epilepsy(flashy light sickness ;) ), but it could be a factor you watched bones, it was a one time thing, if it happens alot, then there might be an issue.

But ti's not generally "unsafe" as you wouldn't watch things on things that make ya go blargh.

I started playing half life 1 yesterday randomly again, and after about 10mins I felt so sick of looking at the screen and the movement. Had to lie down a bit, I think it was because I hadn't eaten / drank much though.

Should get tested for epilepsy to be honest. Cousin had same symptons turned out to be mild form of epilepsy. Better to knwo as it is easily controlled by drugs these days.

Generally not a great idea looking at very bright objects in a dark room for extended periods of time. Can cause eye strain and lead to headaches etc...

could you find me an article or something on it?

Yahoo found me this on BBC Health:

Make sure the contrast between light from the monitor and the room behind it is not too great, so that your eyes don't continually have to adjust between the two. Don't, for example, place your screen in front of a window or a very dark wall
Light the screen from above or behind you with a table lamp. It's generally recommended that the background lighting level is about 300-500 lux
Cover the monitor with an anti-glare device

It's common sense really to watch tv/play games on your pc/tv in a well lit room - Most games actually say this at bootup as a safety measure, they're forced to afaik.

Think about it, a tv is basically a projector (In a very basic sense), staring at it for hours when the only light in the room is coming from the tv is a bit silly really.

Try staring at your mobile phone screen in the middle of the night whilst in bed with the lights off (I've done this a few times, to read a text etc) and you'll see.

My old boss had a ear problem and a problem with being dizzy. For 4 months he had to lay in bed could not read watch tv or play games. It had something to do with his ears not lining up with his eyes so his eyes say hes standing up but his ears say hes laying down. All this makes his brain confused so he would throw up and fall over and have to lay there with his eyes closed for ages. His thing started with a video on his pc at work so you never know what it could be.
