I'm looking at buying a new TV now that my new credit card has arrived with 6 months interest free.

Basically, can anyone recommend a good 28" or 32" widescreen telly?

Sound can be basic stereo as I have a soundsystem at home already.
I'd prefer 100HZ scan but 50 will do.
It must have a minimum of 2 scart sockets and at least one (prefer both) must be RGB.(Don't wanna be watching my R1 DVDs in B&W)
It'd be handy if it was switchable to 60Hz (I think the RGB socket would do this.)
Composite video+stereoLR connectors would be nice but not really needed.

Budget : £400-600

I bought a Panasonic PL32 TV from John Lewis. (its 50Hz as I didnt think spending an extra £100 more was worth while)

I am extremely happy with it.

I wouldnt go for a 28" TV if you can get a 32" one.

I would/did.

You can probably get a shit 32 for the price of a great 28.

I went for a Sony 28" 100hz jobby. It supports RGB, 3 scarts and an svid. £650 inc. five year warranty from sony store (price matched against john lewis).

Very very nice, I'm jolly happy.

I'll add a link when I find one.

This one. By god it's lovely. And to fill in for Bodhi since he sadly cannot be with us: Sonys own hard, they make the best things ever etc. etc.

Ive said it before and I'll say it again...

Sony are just as good as a Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba or JVC.

Except that peoples perceptions are such that they stupidly pay more for a Sony rather than another brand which is just as good but cheaper.

The quality, features and Warranty's are all the same.

Buy a Sony but you are paying more money than you need to.

That's not true. When I searched around John Lewis, I found that sony were the same price as similar spec'ed tvs. I went with sony because I prefered the look of it, and the picture quality seemed a bit better.

I hear toshiba make good sets.

Edit: But seriously Whipped, go for that sony I pointed out. I was in exactly the same situation and after much deliberation, decided on it. The tv is awesome.

Not bad, but this I didn't like.

NTSC playback/ compatible No

Won't this mean problems playing region 1 DVDs ?

Um.. I have no idea why it says that. I'll find out my model number and see if it's the same. Basically, half my dvd collection is Reg 1, I play NTSC games on my xbox 90% of the time. There is 0 problem with it. Tbh I think even if it's a lower model than mine, it'll still be a lie. Nigh on ALL tv's over 150 quid nowadays do ntsc.. on a 28" 100hz sony TV I have *no* doubt that it would work.

I'll let you know when I get home if it's the same model, hence defo supports it.

K, if it does then I'll probably go for that one. I may get it before the weekend then :)

edit : here it says it is NTSC compatibly. I'll see if I can find more proof.

Obviously do *not* go to comet. Try your nearest Sony/John Lewis store. Both will price match, both do a free 5 year warranty.

Will they price match for the online price when the store price is higher though?

Doubtful. But I'd strongly advise against getting from Comet either way. Perhaps Unbeatable

Having said that, when I bought my TV I went straight to the shops (couldn't be arsed to sort out delivery etc) and checked prices after. Store price wasn't more than 20quid-ish more. IMO worth it for walking away with the tele there and then :D (added to the fact that you have to pay an extra 90 quid online for a 3year warranty as opposed to getting a 5 year one free..)

Finlux or Bang & Olfsen...

..although neither are in the £400-£600 price range, so I'm not even sure why I suggested them.

To demonstrate your knowledge of ludicrously overpriced televisions?

Edit: Whipped, just noticed.. the comet deal is with a 1 year warranty, £189 for an extended 5 year cover. Which is rediculous.

Sony Super Trinitron - I got one a few years back, superb picture quality.

Hehe, went into the sony shop on the way home and saw one of those. £899.99. I may have to go back tomorrow. Fell in love with one of those TVs about 4 years ago when I was a poor student and the £1500 price tag made me so upset.

Sony tubes are the best general consumer ones you can get. Toshiba tubes are very good also (and they make better projection tellies than Sony). The rest are mostly running to catch up.

Bang & Olufsen are fucking shit.

Shame you missed the deal at empiredirect.com last week.

They had the Panasonic TX32PL10 for £499 delivered.

Was posted in the Bargains forum at thedvdforums.com and loads of peeps snapped it up.

Ok.

I had a shite brand of TV that lasted for 15 years and then sold it

There.

Sorted

You can make wild statements about anything but it doesnt make it true is what I'm getting at.

PS: I have nothing against Sony. I agree they are a good make.

If you had a sony it may well have looked better and lasted 20 before you thought about selling it.

Your disproof is totally inconclusive. It only proves that Sony is not the only brand to make acceptable and reliable TV's. No one was saying that, people were saying they make the best.

No I sold it cos I was moving to a different country...

Also If that was the case I would have bought a Sony afterwards but Ive now got a Panasonic! :p

That statement that Sony has the best tube is also totally inconclusive.

I could say the same about Panasonic or Samsung or Philips and you couldnt prove otherwise.

I wasn't trying to prove that Sony has the best tube, as I never made that statement in the first place. My belief simply stems from the fact that a) well it's not hard to believe, sony make quality gear and b) when I shopped around, sony stuff looked the best.

Perhaps Stu has more stuff to back his claim up, who knows. I just thought "prove it" was a little annoying so turned the tables and asked you to disprove it, which you obviously cannot do.
