We've got a bus strike coming up next week. The bus drivers want a 12% unconditional pay rise, they were offered 13% over two years, they told the company to get knotted.

All it will mean for me is that the roads are far busier, and if its raining I can't be lazy and get a bus, I have to walk all the way to work. Ah well.

i actually agree with ONO to an extent.

Fireys get 16k starting wage (or some figure close to that)

And they put their lives in danger all the time.

31k is a joke for teh ch00 ch00 drivers tbh.

We don't have a Tube system in NI, just regular trains. Which incidentally are utter shite. Run by the same shit company that run the buses as well, which co-incidentally are also utter shite.

I'll actually be in town on Tuesday anyway, visiting my old workmates :)

i disagree, you start paying those sort of wages you wont attract the sort of staff that willl take the safety aspects of the job seriously enough and as millions travel on the tube every week the last thing you want is a bunch of drivers not giving a stuff about safety.

with regards to other professions...yes they are underpaid in comparision to tube drivers but that is an issue for them and their unions, aren't the firefighters talking of striking now too?

oh btw im a signaller on the railway...........:) but not the tube.

I wouldnt want to see anybody lose some salary, but for firemen to get almost half of what a tube driver gets is a fucking scandal. Admittedly in London the FM get a boost payment for living in the smoke (no pun intended), but for people who put their lives at risk everytime they leave the firestation, the money is crappy.

Local to us the other day, an arconist got caught in his own fire  and 2 firemen got injured rescuing him. FFS, 16k to rescue a school burner. Id have let him smoulder for a while.

Hmm, I think Firemen need more pay, and maybe train drivers do not. Perhaps they could spend the extra money on updating some of the train lines etc.

I agree.

Firemen, nurses, teachers and chartered accountants should get much more pay IMHO.

Just because Firemen get shit pay (hell throw in teachers, doctors, nurses and the likes in there too) doesn't mean Train Drivers are overpaid. They're responsible for the safety of thousands of ppl per working day, so if they do their jobs properly and get people where they need to go safely then they're worth the money.

Other professions pay is a separate matter, and I do think they should get a damn sight more than they do currently - a minimum wage for a nurse should kick off at £60k p/a if you ask me, with Doctors on £100k, no questions.

As for the other two I mentioned, Firemen should kick off at about £80k, with Teachers on at least £45-50k per annum.

I want Gordon Brown's job ffs ;)

I disagree!! I think it takes a great deal of skill to be a fireman! They have to be able to drive the firetruck through traffic that doesnt get out of their way...They have to get people out of burning buildings and have to determine how to get into the burning building and put the fire out in a very short space of time. I think safety is a big issue and they deserve a lot more money! You need firefighters and you wont get them if you pay crap wages!!

These tube guys are getting a good deal and are still striking! Pisses me off!!

What I don't get is that no one is FORCING them to take that career path. They decided they wanted to go and do that job to start with and they knew what the wages would be. If they don't fucking like it, don't do the job.

I've had to walk accross london today to get to work. Not the most pleasant experience since the rest of london also has to walk. The streets were packed and everyone was grumpy, including me. And no fucker has even an incling of a sense of direction.

If you don't like what you're getting paid, why choose to do that job in the first place.

If you really want to do that job cos you love it, then money should be a factor as long as the money is enough to live on.

$30k for an unskilled job just on the premis that they are responsible for the safety of thousands? I'd better point that out the next time a tube train pulls into the station and the driver is reading a newspaper/book/talking to his mate.

All they have to do is accelerate, and decelerate - there's no steering involved - even less oncoming traffic and every now and then keep and eye out for red/green lights.

If that's the basis for your arguement then London Bus drivers should be on a bloody fortune.

...on a lighter note the strike means that I can stay at home and play my new copy of BF 1942, purchased yesterday for just this occassion.
