Maybe we should return to the the separate Saxon kingdoms (East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria, Sussex, Wessex and Essex)? The great thing is though, that WHEN Scotland regains it's independence, and has to apply to join the European Community..... so will England (and Wales and Northen Ireland).... as there will be no entity called the UK anymore.

Switch the WHEN for IF and we're getting somewhere near almost-realistic.

Yeah, so what? Read the second part of the sentence, and independent Scotland would almost certainly have to renegotiate, not just with England but with Norway and Iceland too. "Scottish waters" are backed up the Royal Navy, which they wouldn't have anymore...
