Trouble with Mods

Just got myself a new HD but it was a different format to my old HD (old one was FT...something, new one is FAT32) and can't seem to boot up my old HD on its own to retrieve the mod lists.

I've tried disconnecting the new HD and plugging in the new one as the primary master but comp doesn't like it and I can only get access to the system files (autoexec.bat, config.sys, etc)

Also tried running the new HD as primary and old one as slave, no hope there either. :(

Anyone got any bright ideas that can help?

My dog ate the mod list...

Edit:
Oh yeah, I tell you why your old disk doesnt boot most likely...

Some (all?) BIOS's can't seem to deal with a slave drive that has a bootable partion. So they just deactivate the "bootable" flag. (If someone has a better way to explain this come up with it. :p)

I was in a similar situation once. Bought a new HDD and had the old running as primary slave to transfer data (in your case that cant work bcz of different FAT systems). After that I wanted to put the old disk into a different machine but it didnt boot.

Anyway use fdisk to make the disk bootable again.

Edit2:
I cant find that freakin fdisk thingy on my XP system so I cant tell you what exactly you have to do... but I think you have to "activate the primary partition" or something. Its been ages ago since I dealt with stuff like this the last time.

Just put the hd into someone elses computer and tell him to use it as a secondary. Usually works, havent done it for a while tho :p

Can't you attach everything as it was before the new HD and the upload the the files you need (if it's not a huge amount of files) to some web site or FTP and then you can erase the old HD and format it to what filesystem you like and want?

And everything is as it was?
Same IDE slot on computer?
same cable?
same place on the cable? (some cable have more than one place to attach HD)
same jumper settings on HD?
And you did not have to change anything in your Computer's Setup/BIOS to get your new DH to work?

I assume you know this already and have tryed, but all this could matter.

If all this is as it was I'm out of fast and easy idea's :( but it could still be alot of things to try.

Gonna try the fdisk and disk manager later tonight, and I know one of my m8s has the same HD format as I did so can bug him to get stuff off my HD. Just need to find out when he's available since he works offshore - pretty sure he's back onshore atm tho

Use your old hard drive as a secondary hard drive and copy the data off that you need, if you are not sure how to do this, easiest way is to disconnect your CD drive and use the connections it uses

if everything is the same, ie cables, cable selection, bios and jumpers.... try putting the hd in the freezer (obviously in suitable protection from the ice / water) it often helps. needs to be left quiet a while though, over 48 hours, then another 48 hours to stabilise temprature outside the freezer.

i didnt believe this actually worked untill i tried it with my 80gb quantum fireball.

it decided to completely stop working, and a friend recommended me try, i tried for 3 days to restore the data and no joy, so i gave it a go and whalla... not only could i access all the data and back it up to tape, it also just kept on running perfectly, and to this day i have it as a backup in a spare system i have.

Yes, this worked aswell in my case. But to make the disk bootable again I had to use fdisk. Problem there: everybody and his dog uses FAT32 now.
