Tricky case

Ok I recently bought some upgrades for my old PC, a new mobo, cpu, memory etc.

I took out the perfectly working original contents, and transplanted in the brand new components (something I have done many many times in the past).

Fired it up when complete, and it didnt post. fans came on etc. but no graphics at all. Suspecting a memory problem I had the new memory tested and it works fine.

I then took everything out of the case, and set it all up on a wooden board. Fired it up again and hey presto it worked fine. Back in the case it went and exactly same problem. out of case again and it worked (anyone see a pattern emerging here).

So ok all the new components do actually work just fine. they just dont like to work when installed in the case. Now bare in mind the previous compoinents had worked flawlessly in this case for ages. All comments/suggestions etc welcome.

cheers

Its an msi board that has a diagnostics panel on a back plate with 4 LED's. the error message I get on this when everything is IN the case is supposedly to do with "chipset initialisation". I was all set to just return the mobo, but there is no problem whatseoever when its mounted outside the case. Boots perfectly.

I'm going to guess at an earthing problem. Thats so vague I might as well not say it. Something somewhere is shorting when it is mounted in your old case I guess.

yeah that was my suspicion really, just a solution (that doesn't involve buying a new case) that is eluding me now :)

I'd guess some playing about with a multi-meter, or a lot of careful looking at the mounting points of the mobo.

You sir are correct, and woulda got a big smooochy wet one had it not been for the fact that CCL tech supp suggested the same thing 5 mins ago :)

There was in fact a brass spacer that was not aligned to a mounting hole on this mobo and was causing a short. Moved it to a mounting pint and voila!!
