To quote /.

Starsiege: TRIBES (typically known as "Tribes 1") and Tribes 2 for the PC have been released for free download via FilePlanet by Vivendi Universal Games (also try Tribes 2 BitTorrent link or several mirrors provided by TribalWar commenters).

The two games stand as pioneers of the outdoor combat sub-genre of first person shooters and of all multiplayer games, influencing Halo and UT2004 among other games.
Tribes 1 was the first multiplayer-only shooter, whereas Tribes 2 extended the core unique elements of its predecessor to a greater scale and depth.

With this (previously mentioned on Slashdot) free release, VUG is stirring up anticipation for the release of the third Tribes game, Tribes: Vengeance."

You'll need to enter a form to get a CD key to play Tribes 2 online.

Has *anyone* actually been able to get a cd key?
I don't get one via the form on the site; I'm fed up of filling in a getting redirected like a muppet. I've not downloaded the game yet - is it with that ?

Not to sound patronising, did you log into the Gamespy ID thing that it says you have to? :)

Chaps - T1 was probably, on the whole, the best online multiplayer experience I ever had.

T2 ruled aswell but as usual the community was split over the release of a second game......

Well worth the downloads IMHO :) Still have T2 installed to this day (although there's problems with the ATI catalyst drivers and the menus n stuff).....

T1 was excellent, wasnt as keen on T2 but was still good. I might dl T1 to play it again.

Why have they done this anyway? Tribes 3 is still a little way off from being released?

I preferred T1 out of the two.

T2 had its moments but the Base gameplay was too slow ( Devs placed a speed cap on movement) and teamsizes were just too large. So Classic mod was made to speed it up and make it more action orientated.

Classic mod was better , but still didnt compare to T1 :)

Any chance we can get this up on the Freddyshouse downloads section? I remember liking the demo of T2 :)

I really miss Tribes 1 and then of course, 2. Tribes 2 was such a great game, so poorly let down by awful support and constant bugs and reliability issues. Then they went bust, or something.

Gah, such a shame. Wubed that game.

Tribes 1 was fantastic, tribes 2 could have been good but they tried to make the teams too big and the new vehicles were to be honest pants, and tribes 3 is going to go the same way. /cry.

Played Tribes 1 for 2 years still miss the teamplay and great community it had.

Both Tribes games were let down by there being no distributer/marketing in Europe so after the initial surge of players it gradually thined out.

It wasn't helped in T1 by the devs never making the jump key constant like in T2 so alot of new players didn't realise that you could ski down hills generating speed needed to capture flags in well defended bases. This also made half the player base argue that it was a bug and shouldn't be used even though this made the game unique for me.

Was one of the best teamplay games Ive ever played in nothing has yet to beat sitting in defence on the flag while 3 light flag cappers tried to budge my big fat ass off the flag :)

oooooh... do the original retail versions of the game work?
Actually, I'd be baffled if they didnt and I still have both (and the original gold master T2 disk given to us years ago by Tim Gift ha!)

I gotta reinstall, tribes was just SO good I'm simply wasting time typing anything (but I typed it anyway cos i'm a forumite weasel)

Sorry, the program for Tribes 2 is currently unavailable!

We may, however, open up the distribution of Tribes 2 again in the near future. Please check back soon to see the status of Tribes 2!

Mine said that as well. I clicked the verify button, it sent me an email (had to wait a few minutes), I opened the email and clicked the link, it took me back to gs, once I closed that down it took me back to the page where I had to enter one of them secret code thingies and press submit, THEN I got me cd key.

I hear they stopped giving them out now though (could be wrong so don't give up).

Re: CD Key Prob (Custodian/Clown) ...
Method Custodian gave me and I described in my last post worked fine last night (wednesday).

Tribes 1 works fine, but Tribes 2 seems to want to crash when I run the game while connected to the 'net. :-( I'll have a look at it later.

SO, onto important things: are we getting an FH game going?

I totally agree...

OMFG you couldnt be more wrong ...

Lower teamsizes (around 7-10 for CTF, lower for Arena/DM)

4 vehicles...a 2 man ground Buggy which is used as a mobile spawn and inv station, a 1 man airborne fighter (AKA the "pod") which fires rockets, an 3 man airborne gunship, pilot has a gun and 2 gunners and last but not least a 2 man Jump-tank. It has a limited jump-jet ability, driver has the main gun and gunner has aux weapons.

Devs have stated the vehicles will NOT be overpowered like T2's, they are extremely useful-yet not overpowered tools to be used, as are the packs ( which are a hell of a lot better than T2's packs).

If you take the time to read anything about Tribes: Vengeance you should know that they realise what T2's weak points are.
Besides.....Irrational (the Devs) have a great record...SYstem shock 2, Freedom Force....and had a T1 vet ([IE]KineticPoet) working with them :)

Try the Open beta this summer :)

hmm.... that'll do :)

Oh.... and they have removed the lame ass homing Rocket launcher which took no skill to use  , and replaced it with a rocket pod...fires rockets which you then guide using your reticle.

I dug out my old copy of T2, I'll be using that.

Seems a bit odd that they 'ran out' of CD keys for a game they are supposed to be giving away free....

We got a server up?

I can't get tribes to work.

So i dusted off my old tribes 2 yesterday.
Had a blast as i found a server 32/32 that was full and i had a low ping.

I never found snipeing so easy, unless its a full armor, sheild packing, mortor tossing one man fortress. they take 4 shots usally :(

I have T2 sitting about here somewhere too.

We got a server up?

I'd be up for a runabout - never played it online in any serious capacity, so a good fuck about on it may be in order.

:D

guys,

pardon my ignorance. I d/loaded what I thought was Tribes 2 and fired it up for a blast. Is it solely a MP game, or are there missions etc to play on SP ?

It took me through a "training session" but didnt seem to me to be a SP option?
