Trendy?

My second thread today, must be a record.

Designer fashions.
Do you or don't you?

I like to look good, but I don't think that a label on clothes makes them any better. Some people I know will not buy clothes unless they are by some trendy designer. I frankly do not understand this, except maybe for the "I'm loaded and therefore better than you" kind of attitude, which is not a justification imo.
I also know people who are loaded and couldn't give a stuff about labels. In fact I've found generally that people with serious cash tend not to flaunt it as they have no need to do so.
This isn't just a label thing though. Its also a "it's very fashionable" thing. For example spazy jeans that are twisted, some of the shoes and trainers that are about atm, some of which look like they are made for people with walking impedements. Thiose particularly bad "skater" trousers that hang off skinny spooty teenagers and fray because they are too long.
I really could not care less if what I wear is in fashion/has a label or not. If I think I look good in it and feel comfortable in it then I'm happy. That said, I do have some designer kit as does Mrs Yuck. I buy it because its what I wanted (colour/style etc), and the label just happened to be there. Mrs Yuck I think has other motives :)
Then theres the quality. I've found that generally designer stuff is shit, and after a couple of washes looks crap. Whereas the non designer stuff can last you for ages.

Am I alone? Am I getting old? Do I care? :)

I generally don't wear labels as I can't justify 300 clams for a pair of jeans.

But imo i look better (with what I wear) than the average "trendy" punter.

all in all I won't buy labelled clothes as I don't want to look like every other tambo in Dundee.

I tend to just buy whatever I think looks good. But then again, I don't think a computer gamers forum is the best place to get opinions on this sort of thing, most of us probably either can't or won't shell out for labels.

If in doubt ask your girlfriend.. thats what i do, sounds dodgy and all but she has a very good eye for these sort of things. And as for those "skater" trousers ... its Sk8tr DUH!

No idea what a tambo is but never mind.
You are right though, a good example is those jeans with the faded out strip down the leg, seems like every other girl in town was wearing those.

I just tend to buy what I think looks good. This gets me into trouble with teh ladies usually, cause I'm hopeless at combining things and thus wear Tshirts and jeans all the time with either skate shoes or climbingboots.
I have a friend who swears by designer kit though. She won't leave the house unless she's in the latest set by Oogobo Kikkikkikkiiik, the designer who's so very progressive and hot that nobody has ever heard of him. She hates the 'normal' pret-a-porter stuff though. Far below her

I'm the same as you tdc, I just buy what I like and wear it. I generally try and co-ordinate to the extent I don't look like a walking traffic light but that's about it. I also tend to wear stuff way too big for me to hide the fact I'm a fat bastard. I also have a tendency to wear my footy shirt out occasionally, which results in abuse from sk8rs because they all think I'm a townie. If only they knew what music I listened to and were enlightened enough to realise some of us don't give a shit what we look like!

not quite. she's gorgeous, and always looks very very smart. she also _is_ very smart to boot so I guess that's a plus.
she just goes out of her way to get clothes that she feels look good and reflect her personality.

it's just that I think that's massive overkill, just like wearing classy undies all the time. sometimes jeans and skateshoes look just as good as heels and a silk skirt (ON A GIRL HEH).

I mean, I have suits, shirts, ties etc...but I don't wear them to the beach. I'm utterly failing to make a cohereant point aren't I?

What are skateshoes btw?

I used to love wearing a shirt and tie for work, made me feel pretty damn cool. I don't think people liked my black shirt/black tie combo, but the black shirt/white tie (ala The Hives) combo went down well. I looked like a jazz musician and a bouncer, apparently. I'd never wear a shirt and tie outside of work though, unless it was a formal event. Usually I just wear a pair of cargo trousers with eight thousand pockets I'll never use and a nice jumper.

On a side note my mate who dresses pretty gothicly got given a nike tanktop(!) by his Mum for his birthday. GG!

um, I'll link it in:

right now I'm wearing a pair if dark blue globe rebels, not the poncy grey ones. a pair of baggy grey cordoroy slacks by quicksilver and a black "3v1l = l33t" megatokyo tshirt. a dark brown lambswool spencer under my dark blue 'mutation' hooded sweater for the bikeride back home to keep me warm.
if it was a meetings day I'd wear the same. I can cos I'm cool like that.

Aha, I know the shoes you mean now. Everybody I knew at school had VANS trainers like that.

Ellesse trainers = comfiest things ever.

vans? hmm :/ I like globe and reef. reef shoes and clothes are nice, even though they're prolly made by tortured homeless childeren in some factory in india. skateshoes tend to be bulky (I guess this is to keep the baggy pants off the ground heh) and I don't like the bulky ones :/

I spend far more on work gear than I do on normal clothes but I don't have a choice tbh.

I normally doss about in Quiksilver, Bench shite that kind of crap (snowboarding shite) or I have a bit of a thing going for authentic 50's stuff atm (shirts that is)...er and then I like old "handwoven by Guatomolan bollweevil" shirts and tops...that's the acid taking spirit of '88 in me. Anything remotely punk or near that area has long since gone to the dustbin although I do have my old bike leather and cherry red knee high DM's in the attic lol.

I will not fork out £300 on a shirt but £100 I will (if its quality and for work).

I think the most expensive thing I've had is an old bike leather that cost me about £500.

the most expensive thing I have is a down jacket that I only use on hiking trips. it's yummy warm and orange and packs into a 4by4" space. cost about 350 quid I guess.

I'd never pay that much for "normal" clothes though

hmm, but nice clothes are pretty harshly priced imo. these days I can see myself wearing 300-800 pounds in one go. especially if you add a winter coat / hikingkit into the mix. when I was a student, especially in my grungey period I'd be lucky to hit 10% of that hehe

Thing that I find with followers of fashion is that they actually buy into the idea that they are individuals for dressing in the clothes they do. When in fact they all look the bloody same.

How many birds out last winter with a Burberry check scarff on. Or those little handbags that double up as bowling bags. Not to mention Knee High boots(Thats allowed though) Of course you look individual love. Ive not seen anyone dreesed like you since errrrrrr the last woman to walk by ?

I wear casual for casual occasions and formal for formal. If its got a label on then fine. If not I am not that arsed

I've found women tend to get caught by these fads a LOT more than blokes. Women's shops all tend to have the same flavour of the month crap (ie. the latest wanky fashion) and are all interchangable.

Gypsy tops, 80s 3/4 trousers, etc etc etc. Don't fall for it women! Make a stand!!!

The only labels I tend to buy are:-

Boardwear (Quiksilver, Billabong, Rip Curl, Burton (not that Burton) Forum, Etnies and Mambo) mainly as it is deeply deeply comfy and deeply deeply well made. Plus, snowboarders are fucking cool ok?

Levis Jeans - again, comfy and tend to last forever. Fairly cheap for designer wear aswell tbh.

Nike Golf stuff - mainly cos I am Tiger Woods.

Aside from those I tend to avoid designer labels like the plague, mainly as I don't enjoy being dressed in exactly the same way as everyone else in the pub.

It's all that rubbing up against paving that does that.
For everyday jeans I wear 501s, I'm old and like buttons and they are comfy.

Bods have you ever tried the "custom" service Levi offer?
