I have 2 mates, both cannot live without their mobile phones, one of them even has 2 phones that he carries around with him, the other spends about 2 hours of his work day on his phone.

Nothing overly wrong with that I hear you cry, but oh yes, oh fucking yes there is. You see, neither of them has any credit on them, so the guy at work sting rings all his friends etc when he wants to talk to them, yes there is even a name for giving people missed calls to get them to ring you back. Sting ring for fucks sake.

The other friend with 2 phones rings me from another of his mates phones or texts me to ring him back, always sounding like its urgent. So like a twat I always ring back and it is always something he wants me to do for him, like check on the pc about a motorbike that was made in 1987 or something.

In fact both of them do that, either text from other peoples phones and get me to ring them, and it is ALWAYS for something totally unimportant or boring or shit.

Yesterday I got a text from friend number 1 asking me to ring him back on his girlfriends phone so like a complete spacker I did, and you know what it was for? Can you guess? It was so he could talk to me about his exhaust he got repaired.

Fucking tramps, if you can't afford credit DON'T HAVE A FUCKING PHONE*!!

*thinking about it they can both afford credit they are just too tight to pay for any.

*****.

Text them back with "Sry, no credit"
The irony of you texting them saying you have no credit shouldn't be lost on them.

The other option is ignore the message.
If I get an unknown/withheld number call me, I don't answer it. If they leave a vm then I'll call them back. If they don't leave a vm, then it wasn't an important call.
These guys sound like they wouldn't leave you a vm. Using the same logic, if they don't leave a vm then it isn't important enough for you to ring them back.

I don't answer work when I'm driving so they HAVE to leave a vm for me to call back. They know I won't call them back unless they leave a vm. It's also why work hate me with phones and driving. :)

My own family know that they have to leave a vm or I won't call them back.
A mobile phone is a device that people use to request some of your time. Unless the call is worthwhile, I don't waste my time answering it.

Simple solution.

Get new friends.

As sad and blunt as this advice sounds, it's the best way.

I read a good line on Sickipedia about these types of people: saying "he's a good guy once you get to know him" is a nice way of saying "he's a total dick, but you get used to it".

You don't need to be obnoxious about it, one of the best ways (I've found..) is to let them drift until the gap gets to big to bridge.

Not being friends with them is not an option, for all their faults they are my mates. It just winds me the fuck up that they cannot live without a mobile but are unprepared to actually pay for them.

It has become almost second nature for them to assume that they don't need credit, I mean one mate (Stu) earns about £150 a day yet he still won't put god damn credit on his phone.

Ah well :D

What Zen said tbfh. Stop answering, at least during the day. If it's very important then they'll leave a voicemail message about it.

Other than that, if they're real men and not total girls like you Trem, they can probably wait until you see them in the pub :)

Trem, if they're truly your mates, then you should be able to explain the situation and they can do something about it.

If they say "fuck sake mate, chill out", or words to that effect, then that's someone that would take the piss over anything. Lifes too short for people that drain on your life.

Sting ring? Really? They really say those two words together in that combination out in public? They really haven't thought this one through...

I'd suggest next time they get you to call saying its urgent, as soon as they talk about something unimportant, have a go... say you have important stuff to be doing or whatever. Tell them not to do it unless it really is an emergency else you'll just stop ringing back...boy who cried wolf and all that. If they're decent people they should have at least an inch of humility about doing it; if they don't then just stop anyway, they'll soon get the message.

Or just confront them and say you're gonna stop because it's too annoying...

Either way, don't let it go on and on else it'll become the norm and never stop.

strangely, this sting rings a bell with me (sic), because my mate's gf does it to my mate all the fucking time. they even have a protocol worked out based on the number of times she lets it ring. sick man.

ok, they're both full time students so that more or less means they're poor as fuck, but shouldn't that mean they share the load rather than her having him call her? like, holy sponge, batman!

Advocating the behaviour isn't helping, stop calling back if it bothers you.

I wouldn't drop a friend for that, just adjust the situation.

Friends shouldn't be judged based on what they do wrong, but what they do right. If they do no right, they're no friend.

None of my mates do anything like this. They all get up to buy the round when it's their turn, they all share the driving, nobody minds buying food, etc.

They're my mates because they view money pretty much the same way as I do.

Im one of these people that even if my phone is sitting next to me ringing i wont always answer it. If im watching TV or chatting to a mate for example.

Not sure where it says in the rule book that you have to answer every phone call right away, its what a text or voicemail is for

It's quite, well, nice word here...umm...idiotic that the mobile phoine ahs become a "must have, must answer" device. It has missed calls for a reason, it has voicemaal for a reason, it has txt for a reason AND on that note it SHOULDN'T be expected to answer a text message, by definition a "just fyi" thing, right away.

I've gotten many questions of the "why didn't you answer/text/have a phone" nature and it always get the same answer;

When we had landlines, it was expected to sometimes not get an answer.

IF you're in an emergency, try more time, if not, calm the hell down :p
