How many torrent downloads should you run - as a max - generally speaking ?
Or does it entirely depend on bandwidth / RAM cache etc ?
I'm running 9 simultaneous on my client, and its going slow but steady. The client's FAQ recommends 2 or 3 max, which seems absurd to me.

It really varies on the state of the torrents and the speed of your connection.

If your upload speed to a client doesn't hit 1kB/s then the peer your client is uploading to will snub you, meaning you're unlikely to get downloads from that particular peer. Unless you've set your torrent client to limit the overall number of uploads then the performance might not be as great.

Test it and see, try 3 torrents and be patient. Sometimes it takes a while for a torrent to pick up speed. I'd recommend 3 torrents maximum, but there is no exact right answer.

If you decide to seed post download, its only a courtesy isn't it ? Seeding doesn't improve your download speeds does it ?

I'm not sure about this honestly. It usually just depends on the host I get. (I usually seed to a 1:1 ratio.. So I DL the full file, then upload the full file)

Uploading shouldn't matter I think, though it's nice to do.

Uploading does matter, however it has nothing to do with the host/tracker. Most clients typically are configured to give precendence to peers that have sent large amounts of information to them. Hence if you upload more you get more back from other peers. Thats not to say you wont get a reasonable speed if you refuse to upload as many factors influence the health of the cluster and its ability to support leeches. On top of this be aware that many of the bitvomit family of clients that are designed to leech and not share are connection blocked by many users.
