I didn't follow his politics hard but whenever I saw him on telly I thought "there's an intelligent chap, talking with passion and authority on a subject he loves".

This (for UK folks, I guess) is a fascinating 3 minutes as an example of both what he's talking about and what I said above.

Sorry to see him go. He was like your grandad working in politics.

But what he had to say about the Iraq war and war in general was spot on to be fair.

I'm surprised that Scouse didn't follow his politics but I echo his comments. Although I disagree with a lot of Tony Benn's politics he is the type of person I want to see in Parliament articulating one side of the argument in an intelligent way and standing on for it in an ethical and honest way. I wish there were more people of his standard in politics.

RIP. I didn't agree with him politically (not always because he was wrong, but I always thought he came from the "wishful thinking" school of socialism), but he was one of the very few politicians I've ever heard who I actually respected. He was probably too moral for politics.

I had the deepest amount of respect for him. A politician, a broadcaster, a pipe smoker, and statesman with gravitas, conviction, experience, intelligence, integrity, character, affability, and perspicacity. A gentleman and a proper MP of the old school. Qualities lacking in politics and politicians today.

Lamp's said it better than I ever could.

A true old school politician has passed, someone who stood by his principles, a talent sadly lacking in politics today.

The thing with Tony..who if you didn't know..was Sir Anthony Benn, but dropped the title.
He always send the truth and it was very inconvenient so he was ignored because fudging the truth is the core of politics.
Just watched very interesting German comedian on the subject of America and it's wars, so bleedin true. (It's subtitled)

Not exactly funny..but its the best the Germans can do, does open up your eyes that they do hate their politicians as well.

He renounced his 'Lord' title to stay in the house of commons. If not he would have moved to the house of Lords. He hated the fact that un-elected clergy (Conscience of the House) had a say in matters there. Did not agree with his politics but he was a rare breed, a politician who stuck by his principles. For that I respected him immensely. RIP.
