so as for a fresh breath of air i rolled a frier on alb/pryd this night with 2 friends starting all at lvl 1 ( the other 2 has no lvl 50 etc. ) and we have a fun time in albland minding our own ... untill i get to lvl 3 then i get a pm from a GM <your name is breaking the CoC you have 1 min to provide a new name > im like :eek2: wtf ( btw name was olddirtybastard ) i figured somone reported the name.

welcome to pryd

anyway i rerolled instead of taking a namechange and im happy the GM prevented me to offend more ppl ( why they waited 1 month to :twak: a guild named <White Pride> still beats me and we still have a bumhole that are hairy and smelly on hib/excal :)

did you not think that olddirtybastard fell into the same name category as : BanMeNow Homosshouldbeshot or Cunnylinghus? such childish originality appals me. I hope you were not shocked when you were asked to change it although i accept your apology. If you pmd me for an invite to a group with that name i would almost certainly tell you where to go :)

Hmmm.

If you decide to create a character with an offensive name, it stands to reason that someone will be offended.

At least you didn't level to 50 before it had to be scratched.

oh no someone named their char after a "has been monkey music" black man!!!1 pls no more i cant stand it!!11!

wtf is wrong with that name?
Seen alot more retarded names then that tbh.
Poor sod that has nothing better to do then to sit around playing police imo.

If Olddirtybastard is a violation to coc etc shouldnt Rambo be that aswell? i mean this guy must have slaughtered hundreds of chinese/arab ppl troughout the movies etc. Olddirtybastard rapped about 40s, bitches and blunts, i take killing ppl by the dozen more seriously then singing about what he wants to do with my "mama" tbh.

^^

Don't know anything about rappers.

I'd have thought a character name with 'bastard' in it was bad enough.

Rambo enemies were Americans, Vietnamese and Russians not chinese and arab.

Any way what’s the problem. The name is clearly offensive and in breach of the CoC, you only had to change the name, deleting the character was your own doing.

Do you really think GOA don’t have an auto detection program for swear words in names?

He chose to reroll, I asked for alternate names as I was more than happy to just change the name for him-- yes it was reported to me.

I just gotta say, you guys are numbnuts. What is the basics of this game? The sword meets the flesh. Killing badguys. Violence. If you gonna say that a dirty name is bad for your kid but slitting their throat with a sword is not, then you have some kind of lame perspective on things.

However, I understand why GOA has this policy, cause theres alot of sick freaks who like to sue some poor sods for everything, it's for their own protection I guess. OMFG U STEPPED ON THAT ANT ITS MY GRANDMA REINCARNATED! I'M OFFENDED!! SUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tbh I blame Americans and God.

u would however let ur child play a game with the goal of defeating the other realms/players by using force and weapons to kill them?

omg didnt think it would come to this but i agree with Sko ^^

Rambo is a name taken from a film, sure, he could have been forced to rename, but atleast 20% of the names of characters comes from movies/series/cartoons etc ppl have seen, and its hard to controll it.

Olddirtybastard contains offensive language (Bastard or DirtyBastard)

I like the Name DOB myself, with kids around its a shame, but we do have to be considerate.

Personally I'd like to play on an over 18's server then you wouldn't have this problem.

I'm not a big fan on censorship, but then I'm hard to offend and others might be different!

Hope you have fun leveling :)

To be honest, many names would only fit an over 18 age, under 18 mental age server.

I don't really see whats so hard with the word bastard, is it just that people don't know what it actually means and only sees the slang meaning of it?

(bastard means a child born without married parents which isn't really considered strange today)

I don't see the issue here... if part of a name contains a word or phrase that is considered as potentially offensive by more than a minority of players (and anyone who says "bastard" doesn't fall into that category is deluding themselves), then out of common consideration and courtesy it shouldn't be used. Would an entire character concept be ruined just because you have to choose a name that everyone finds acceptable? Of course not.

The slang tem is now an accepted interpretation, and appears as such in many dictionaries:

Main Entry: bas·tard
Pronunciation: 'bas-t&rd
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old French, probably of Germanic origin; akin to Old Frisian bost marriage, Old English bindan to bind
1 : an illegitimate child
2 : something that is spurious, irregular, inferior, or of questionable origin
3 a : an offensive or disagreeable person -- used as a generalized term of abuse
And anyway, Misleath, I am sorry but your argument doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny... Lets be honest, the same can be true of a lot of expletives/swearwords. For example, the dictionary definition of the word "bitch" is "the female of the dog or some other carnivorous mammals", but does that mean people shouldn't find the slang term offensive? I get the feeling that if a woman is standing in your way when you wish to move past her she might react better to "Excuse me, madam" than she would to "Excuse me, bitch", yeh? :)

Oh, and a final note to Sko: You are right, stylised violence does indeed form part of the basis of the game. And of course I would never say that a dirty name is bad for a kid but slitting their throat with a sword is not. But then again, neither would I ever tell a kid (or anyone else for that matter) that screwing a bunch of friends by stealing from them and then gloating about it is acceptable either ;) (sorry, couldn't resist that one...)

I don't really see how you can say that female dog and madam is the same thing. I think I would get better response if I said "Excuse me, bitch" rather than "Excuse me, dog".

This isn't intended to Kalthorine just for the name discussion.
People get way too upset for trivial things like names in games. I once saw a discussion with a guy with a ordinary east european name had to have his name changed because someone with the same first name had killed and maimed lots of people. Its like saying: you make me upset because you are named Adolf, please change your name. If this rule would apply generally to daoc I could name like 50 chars that should have to rename, but why would I care, its just a game.

Agreed... and I apologise for not being clearer in the point I was trying to make, which was that just because a word has a "proper" and a "slang" useage that doesn't make the slang useage any less offensive.

I do agree with you 100% here Misleath - political correctness for in-game names (and other areas) can often be taken to ridiculous extremes. It just so happens that in the particular case of the name under discussion in this thread the situation is much more simple: (a) Recognisable swear words should not be used in names, (b) Bastard is a recognisable swear word, (a) + (b) = don't use it :)

Good point to flag up though, Misleath
