I too am a network little Hitler. We have to be l33ter than the users so that ppl like u lot don't b0rk the system just so you can go home early :D

******

TDC. The downside of having network admins under your rule is that they are the ones who will hide the dozen smtp spammail servers and all those terrabytes of pr0n that get backed up onto your tapes at night.

yus Luap,

IT "professionals" are some of the worst "do as I say, not as I do ({05 1 a/\/\ 4/\/ l337 /\/37\/\/0rk d00d)" sheisters I have ever come accross (present company excepted)

:D:D:D:D

you know it's sooo fun to see an admin get twitchy after his p0rn collection suddenly disappears without a trace off a hidden partition :D

i watched him sift thru 50 megs of log for cp's mv's and rm's searching for that magic command and waited for another 10 mins after I saw him admit to himself he had gone utterly mad :D:D

then I told him.

his punishment was to be my coffee slave for a month.

/me 's nicer than the bofh. but only just ;)

sorry m8ty. been there. that 'linux thingy'? I use it too. In fact, every admin shouldn't be without. Novell Netware has similar um helpfull tools and unix? yes *ix has ways too. all is good

but

a. my users workstations bios is locked
b. my users workstations boot direct to C:
c. my users workstations do not have a cdrom drive
d. my users workstations policy prevents them accessing A:

my users have only what I give them :D

[edit]
if you have managed to [shall we say clandestinely] access workstations or servers then your local admin would um um not be working for me [or at least not for very long]
[/edit]

HEHE...

My users cannot touch their registry.

Direct X and Java craplets are disabled (unless you have local admin rights... Which noone has)

Pr0n sites are monitored. If we catch you going to one, you're flagged and redirected to an ABN AMRO Internet Usage policy page.

IRC, ICQ, and AIM will not work. Yahoo Messenger will, but no one knows this.

Real Player does not work (can't get through the firewall)

Screensavers have been removed from most departments ('specially Customer Service).

Their BIOS is locked down.

They all have a personal directory at e:\(username), we constantly monitor the contents. Games stored there are deleted. If pr0n is found (comes in via email), HR is contacted, the user is fired.

I randomly audit each C:\ drive. MP3's are deleted, pr0n goes bye, bye. Games are deleted or uninstalled.

Happiness is not allowed.

rename all *.exe/*.bat files in your games dir to *.xex/*.tab , do it in dos as it's faster, and rename all files in your games dir, once you have worked out how to do it, make a few bat file to do it and also restore it.
lol set up a share on the IT bad mans machine he/she will never look there. how do you do the invisable dir again.

uhhhhh... Just out of curiosity... What is this "Linux Thingy" you speak of? Odd that I've never heard of it...

I have 2 Linux boxes (1 laptop and 1 pc) and 2 FreeBSD boxes (again, 1 laptop and 1 pc) at my desk along with my win2k and NT4 machines. The Linux PC houses our Quake server (for Admin's ONLY!). and I use the othe machines for whatever.

Thanks for the glasses and jacket.

ah well there is such a thing as 'the sysadmin's hack-floppy'

when stuck into an NT4 box it boots and allows you to mount any partition. the intresting one is [duh] the one with the SAM on it. on the floppy is a utility that can read from and write to the SAM database.

it's not exactly linux tho, just known as such

there you have it :D

I think it might just be a box of persil alright m8. Havent ID said repeatedly that they felt the rox in Q/QW were just far too powerful? I must say I agree, if you had the r/l you really had no reason to use anything else (except confined spaces :D)

when I was camping at RUTC, someone propositioned diskless workstations as the 'most secure' , does anyone actually use this system or is it too hard to find the bootroms?

O

old.venturer01

disk less computers , would probably have worked, but just think of all the cash ms wouldn't get ?. also if your network goes down your stuffed, even losing the network in a small office with a networked printer is a hassle.
