BBC News - Tiger summit aims to double numbers

Am I the only one who thinks if you want to double tiger numbers you should build more zoo's?

Consider their very high market value, their massive territories they roam through, the low incomes of people in those areas and you can soon see that extinction in the wild has become inevitable.

At this point the best thing to do would be to capture the remaining wild stocks to ensure a decent gene pool in the captive bred ones.

Maybe not a zoo, as it would kill the natural tigers pretty much(turn em into semi pussycats), but a wildlife ssanctuary of some sort.

Should build one anyway, just a huge ass, world effort, get some animals behind lock, key and guard, but enough space for a roaming, natural enviroment.

Then again, what's the point? What if all tigers get snuffed? It's not exactly like we pine over the sabretooth anymore.

Maybe we should accept that we rule this planet and only animals worth keeping in the system are those that provide us with sh*t ;)

Or, just let everyone know that anyone caught poaching will be shot in the head, no exceptions.

To put it in context its the equivalent of several years wages walking around to people struggling to feed their families with a very low chance of detection because the areas tigers roam are so massive they are effectively un-policeable.

I wish it were possible for them to remain in the wild but I cannot see any realistic prospect for it.

Anyone caught hunting tigers should be allowed to test their skills in a 20 foot by 20 foot cage, hand to hand.

Leave them to live in the wild and severely punish those that hunt them. Keeping a tiger in an enclosure is cruel imo

Crueler than letting them go extinct?

We are reduced to unpalatable choices because despite all the money already spent on protection and the trading bans they are rapidly collapsing to extinction.

One of my old drinking buddies in Burma was this guy.

Used to get some real mad stories from the trips he did in the Jungle.

I'm trying to find the program he did for the Discovery Channel - also about the Tiger poachers.
