So, artists doing their own Spotify. In theory I should be all for this; artists taking control of distribution, engaging directly with their fans, cutting out the middleman etc. etc. So why do I just look at it and think "no way would I give this bunch of douchebags my money so long as I have a hole in my arse?"

Its 5 years to late. And twice the price of competitors. Its also going to drive piracy up, not down.

By siloing themselves into one service that only does their work, the force consumers to subscribe to two services. Which they wont do. They'll just sub to spotify, and pirate the stuff they can't get on Spot. Or ditch Spot and pirate both sets.

'Usher, Daft Punk, and Madonna have been living in wretched penury for far too long, and it's time for people to give back'

This made me laugh and summed up these creatively bankrupt cretins quite nicely. Fortunately for me, I'm more likely to listen to the sound of Katie Hopkins' vibrating rectum than fire up an album by these artists or their ilk. This would be a fantastic idea if it was managed by a group of fresh, creatively experimental and generally quite good musicians.

Didn't Usher just release his album in a box of cheerios or something? Seems like a good choice for promoting Tidal.

If I have to pay more to get less I won't use it. I'll stick with Spotify.

I pay a fiver a month for Spotify, it's not my fault that they can't cut deals with Spotify, all the artists that are like 'omg no, we're not going on spotify' are now... on Spotify, so it can't be -that- bad.

It comes down to money, I'm not going to give more money, just because it goes to directly to the artist, sorry.

Heard about it on the wireless at work.

Bit pointless really (for me anyway) but I am sure the kids who listen to that garbage will love it.

Far to late in the day, but I'm sure some overly hyped TIDAL exclusive albums in the next 12 months by the Artists in question will have a few people eager to give Jay Z their cash.

Fuck them all with a hot poker!

I don't understand this really, there are zillions of free tracks for streaming on youtube, you can download pretty good quality mp3's with utter ease...people still buy tracks?
OK a fiver a month is worth the hassle and no doubt you can get better quality, but youtube is legal as well!

I used to download music all the time, but then I figured, hey Spotify is easy to access and its relatively cheap, so I may aswell give -something- back, I can't afford to buy CDs, but it's better than just freeloading Youtube (Like I know alot of people do)

This though? - Fuck that, this is like some next level Illuminati shit. :p

Well Youtube isn't really freeloading , there us a lot of ads and even if you copy paste the url into a download site you usually watch the ad to check the track is any good.

I used to download a ton of mp3's, and yes I can get a lot of the music I want for free from youtube. But I can't take youtube with me to the gym while I'm on a threadmill, or in the car. I could get it all as mp3 but that takes up space, and time to get them. With Spotify I have all that music, in playlists, everywhere I go, on all my devices, all the time. And it does feel good to give back to the creators of the music and the music service (Spotify).

I'm confused here, too lazy to look but does Spotify have streaming and surely if you can stream Spotty you can stream Youtube and downloaded Spotty tracks aren't that much smaller.
In the car I just stream mixes and quite often I hear songs long forgotten about, then usually you can find the track in the comments.

Yes but you can also create offline playlists with Spotify.

It will take off as a premium product, if people buy into Apple branding they will happily buy into Tidal so they can latch onto to someone elses corporate cool.
Just look at Dre Beats, goes against every bit of commonsense until you factor in fashion.

Absolutely agree 100%. Just goes to show that fashion attracts stupidity and ignorance.
