Someone changed a policy on our NDS tree and now everyone has lost all their desktop settings and My Documents folder. This means me and my collegues going around trying to recover all their files with 3 days of possible corruption.

Sarcastic w00t!

They have two trains, running on the same line and in opposite directions.

Thank you all...

what i actually do for the dvla right now is customer enquiries group - vehicles / mandatory V5 department...

you know all that jazz about having to have your logbook to sell your car? advise people on that, and other basic registration enquiries + tax enquiries.

basically means sitting on my arse in a comfy chair in front of a top of the range dell optiplex w/ 19" tft, in what i want to wear, as opposed to corporate whore's uniform of shirt, shoes, trousers and tie....

um, two weeks a month it's pretty busy (week before and week after tax reminders go out (people psychically expect us to know they've sold their car, moved address, etc - BOY are they going to pay when continuous registration comes in in a few months' time....))

the other two weeks a month it's pretty bloody dead, and i get to sit there and catch up on my novels (in this period i typically go through a book a day - fast reader - costs a bloody fortune - thank god for amazon)... and chat to the people around me - who unlike all previous jobs i have ever had, and indeed college too... are NOT tossers.

I never thought i'd like this job at all to be honest, i applied for it, and accepted it when it was offered, because i was on the dole... i was getting grief from my signing officer already (i'd only been unemployed like 2 months ffs) and quite frankly the idea of all the hot totty in the dvla appealed (massive casual workforce in the summer consisting of hot student chicks (who all seem to work out))

but it turns out i DO enjoy it, because it's a lot less stressful than coding and web-design, database development etc... i can go home at the end of the day and that's IT, work does not follow me home, i don't need to worry about it at all... it's great :>

anyway on to what i will be doing:

in light of my confident and approachable telephone manner + my astounding knowledge of the vehicle registration system as it applies to what i have to do... i've been promoted to deputy administrative officer (they can't make it a permanent promotion immediately because that can only be done by a committee that sits once a year, and has yet to be announced, but it will be after the EO board, which will be in august iirc)...

whassit mean to me? 4-6 weeks' advanced & intensive training in all the stuff i did not already do... pay rise, effective immediately. overtime & shift disturbance pay for the duration of training (i normally work afternoons)... increased annual leave & flexi-cores (i already had 6 weeks annual leave! (not including public and privilege holidays (over 2 weeks worth, and flexitime, another 2 weeks).. and erm, looks like i'm on the fast track :> if we ever decide we actually want to DO electronic vehicle licensing (EVL), instead of letting the driving standards agency (people who do driving tests) have it... i could be leading my own team in a year or two..

ima stop ranting now. sorry. excited :)

not too sorted on the details of it as yet, because when i read the bulletin it was never anything i had to worry about... now i will have to, so i'll go look up the specifics...

but in a nutshell;

the registered keeper of a vehicle is responsible for the vehicle at ALL times, up until we receive notification that they are no longer the keeper (note, we receive, not they send - not necessarily the same thing)

so you sell a car on to a guy, without doing the transfer properly on the registration document say (say you'd lost it and weren't fucked with getting a new one)... he then goes through a speeding camera... you as the registered keeper will get the penalty - that's always been the way... but before you could have raised hell and said "but i sold my car, yada"... in future you would still be liable... it's a jobby to cut down on vehicle crime... and i can see it raising HAVOC with people that don't do stuff properly.

anyway that if i recall correctly is the essence of continuous registration, in a nutshell... i may not be exactly correct... and as i said, i'm going from memory, so don't quote me :>

oh there's other stuff too... like say having 14 days from when ur tax was due to tax ur car, and if it isn't done in that time, instant and non-negotiable £80 fine. that rises sharply. i think after 28 days it gets up to £1000 onwards... there was something in the paper about it the other day, but as i said, it wasn't something i'd have had to worry about so i have yet to learn as much as i'd like yet.

Well Wolfeh I just tried to report the untaxed car thats parking in my street, and they will only accept it in writing. I mean, WTF? What difference does it make? I give them a REG number, and they check it out! Why does it have to be on fucking paper?

Give me an email addy and I'll do that, but I ain't gonna waste paper doing the DVLA's job.

tom; you can report unlicensed vehicles by email... see addy/link below.

as for why they'd need it in writing...? because it's a legal document, it's gotta stand up in court, it's a witness statement...

unlic.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk

when you mail stuff to that address they send someone from the enforcement office to go watch the vehicle... obviously helps if you state when the vehicle can be seen on the road untaxed etc, if for example it's parked off the road, but drive on the road with no tax...
