This whole IRC 'lol' thing

*This is a public health warning: this thread is very pointless and was started because the author couldn't be bothered to continue writing about network topologies. Reading it too much will make your head fall off. Or something*

OK - who can honestly say that, when in IRC, when they type 'lol', they ACTUALLY laugh out loud? I mean REALLY? Sometimes, admittedly, something is said that makes ya chuckle, but must of the time, it's used as punctuation in an otherwise normal (and probably unfunny) sentence.

How many people must be missing their arses after having bandied the phrase 'Roflmao' around? Does it hurt? Is surgery required afterwards?

How many people have scripts that automatically look out for the words 'lol' being typed in, and then write 'Laughing Out Loud!' for you in a distinctly gh3y (to use a l33t term) manner? :)

AND, just to finish this off, how many of you have started something you can't be bothered to finish, and are only carrying on because you've written a fair amount already?

Yep, me too.

it's just one of those abbriviations that have turned into words m8. I personally like it better when someone types 'hahahaha' than when that same person types 'lol'. There is another word I use a lot [and hate for that matter :D] and that is the immortal >>>heh<<< It just slips out :D can't help it heh <-there I did it again.

Also there is that [as you said] /distinctly gh3y manner/ of emphasizing just about every single buzz-word that was ever spoken. In as much purdy CoLoRs as possible. Gads it's almost like your six year old sister decided to use your monitor for her latest crayon masterpiece =P

Generally I type "Heh" or some such these days, I've cut down on lol because its utterly queer.

never once have I laughed out loud (fnar) when typing it on IRC, when I do laugh IRL at IRC (rarely) - I'll always bother to make it noteable (christ knows why, they don't care I'm laughing)

This is great: i mentioned this phenomenon in a room on Quakenet, and now people are realising what they're doing - check it:

<Divide^> omg i just about put lol, i stopped myself at lo
<Divide^> =]
<Anarky> Hah!
<Anarky> Nice!

/me is well imnpressed :D

I personally think 'lol' should be replaced with 'Lollbunerr', typed LOLBNR. It means 'Laughing Out Loud But Not Really'.

Says it all really :)

You obviously don't hang around with very funny people. I find myself laughing pretty much every night at things that friends say.

Although admittedly it is overused

I agree Stu, I find very often especially on Game servers, that funny incidents or comments, often incite me to guffaw loudly at home - but even when they only induce a smile or mild amusement, people know what you mean ffs

I very nearly said 'lol' to someone once: managed to stop meself tho :)

I also seem to end up calling people by their nicks in real life - even tho more often than not their real names are easier to pronounce/shorter/REAL :p

Now that IS sad.

I called Daz "Durz" by mistake once in real life, it angered me greatly.

If you dont know what it stands for it can sound incredibly lame! But I guess I just use it without thinking nowadays, along with "heh", or "hahaha"

I've never used "ROFL". In fact, reading this thread, i've only actually found out what it _means_ :)(those lame smilies are gettin annoyin)

I laugh @ the things some people say online, although I aren't an IRC llama... I just use ICQ mostly instead :)

Some of the shite on this general discussions forum is damn funny. If you have a sense of humour, then you should find stuff...erm...humourous.

thx

"...although I aren't an IRC llama..." :)

That's another thing: after having been online for so long (and having the unfortunate ability to spell), I now can't help myself but correct tiny and irrelevant mistakes.

MUST!
...
STOP!

CORRECTING!
...
PEOPLE!

/me just can't control it any more :(

Lots of ppl do actually laugh out loud at irc n what's sed on it: u only need to look at the numerous irc quotes pages to see that loadsa ppl say v.funny things.

And I know that Anarky laughs at IRC quotes a lot cuz that's usually what we do to pass the time when we should be working ;)

/me makes an effort not to type 'lol' any more.

Anyhoo - back to work.
