This one time, at bandcamp, I stuck a *FLUTE* up my... - noob question, instruments.

So how does the con, level, whatever, of the instrument affect things? Its like mage-staves or something? I dont get it.. :eek6:

i think the better the con on the weapon is, the longer the song works after youve put the instrument away or are being hit

There's several things that are affected by your instrument con.

Higher con instruments will give a longer pulse. The moment I switch to my weapon after the last pulse of swirling notes will give me 10 more pulses at my current level untill the song ends. I believe a the early levels the pulse only lasts 4 or 5 pulses.

It will also effect your mez length.

TimeBonus Instrument
0 Rowan
2 Elm
4 Oaken
10 Heartwood
13 Runewood
16 Stonewood
18 Ebonwood/Ellyl
20 Dyrwood

These are all the merchant instruments, keep note that some of these are not in out version 1.45. Our mez has a base length and a percentage is added to our mez depending on the instrument we use. A Dyrwood (not in our version, ebonwood/ellyl instruments are the current highest) will add 20seconds to the base mezz length.

Someone posted this link on the boards a little while ago.

Sorry cant remember who it was but it is probably the best class guide I have seen. (for any class that is)

Convinced me to start a Minstrel alt

[EDIT] thats right it was Verena

That site is indeed "the" minstrel bible :)

Every aspect of playing a minstrel is covered there.

Higher con flutes get you less resists too.
As for mez length, I'm still unconviced about the actual lengths. I tested it with my char at level 28 (ish) with the 20 sec mez and got 40 secs for everything I mezzed (grey-red) with a yellow flute. Will have to try some more tests...

OK, tests done... following are the results

Code:
MOB \ Flute rowan	iron	bright iron	dementia*
puny skel (grey)	29	38	38 52
grave gob welp (green)	29	38	38 52
undead retainer (blue)	29	38	38 52
saxonbone skel (yellow)	29	38	38 52
spectral essence (red)	-	-	- 52

Flute Length	Bonus
rowan 29	+0
elm 32	+3
oak 35	+6
iron 38	+9
heart 42	+13
rune 46	+17
stone 49	+20
dementia	52	+23
ebon 52	+23

So from those tests it looks like mob con has little effect on mez duration (though purples might be shorter, I was solo so didn't want to risk it, the red was dangerous enough :p). Also the level of the flute affects mez length as suggested by Verena. My previous 40 secs for everything was probably using a stonewood flute. Another thing I might check at some point is whether the bonus is capped - is using a purple flute much better than yellow. As I was doing this with my level 43 I couldn't get a flute higher con than blue so all would have been uncapped. I will test a high con flute next time I play some prydwen. :)

EDIT: Oh yes one other thing I checked was enchanted flutes. The enchant doesn't seem to affect mez length but may well affect resists.

*dementia is a barrows drop flute similar to the ellyll flute.

Instrument quality

I have a suspicion that instrument quality also affects the resist rate. Frex, I have a shop bought ebonwood flute (100% qual) and a fine asterite flute (89% qual, with some nice stat bonuses on it; I think it has a +3 char or something), they both con blue to me at the moment, but my sense is that I get fewer resists from the shop bought one. Hard to really prove this without extensive testing, but from chatting to other minstrels in my guild it does seem to be the general sentiment.

(ie. If you want to experiment with this, buy a few flutes now. After the next patch, the shop bought quality goes to 85% like you'd expect for shop bought armour/weapons).

Lin

ps. Hope we have some good fletchers out there somewhere. I predict high flute demand when the new materials are out. I know I'll be in the queue ...

Yes I suspect quality and also enchantment affects the number of resists, though I can't say I'm hugely resisted with my dementia flute. The test I performed was strictly on lengths, testing resists is a lot more dangerous. ;)

is dementia flute random drop or specific mobs?

Any of the high level mobs I think. Got mine off a megalith wight.
It's +5 instruments, +10% spirit resist and cons yellow at 40, blue at 41 (same con as ellyll).

Bit more info and a sneaky bump...

I checked for flute capping and can confirm that the additional time from a flute is capped to your level. Eg. a red flute gives the same length as a yellow flute.
On the other hand a higher con flute may have a higher bonus so give less resists. That's not a checked thing though, just a thought I had. :)
