OMG. I have been working in PC`s for 7 years now.

Ive heard almost every excuse, answer etc in the book. At least i though i had till today.

I currently am a IT Support Officer for a college. A student approached me regarding his cd writer...

He bought the machine from Time Computers, and just recently has had this CD Writer Installed, by the same company.

The CD writer does work, but when he tryed to play a music CD he found no sound came out of the Speakers.

Times' answer?

"Well sir you HAVE to buy a 2nd soundcard, as the soundcard you have will only support one CD" WTF!?!?

This is the biggest ammount of baloney i have ever heard!!! So that would mean u would need a seperate set of speakers as well!!!

Anyone with half a techie brain or installed a writer them selves know that most of them come with a Y cable so that u can plug exsisting CD Audio into it, and thus into the soundcard.

This isnt made up. If anyone out there has anymore stories about times "technical expertise" or indeed anyother major retail outlet then please do!

On another note if anyone can tell me where i can get one of these cables for this poor student then please email me

10 years over here - my PC is the latest incarnation that has evolved from the 286 12Mhz I had back in 1989, the video card is still working in another PC.

Most of the modern soundcards have two or even three connectors, one may be for a modem and another for AUX. maybe you could just plug the second cable straight in.

Been pissin' around with 'puters for a fair while now and I also refuse to believe that you don't have trillions of bit's n bobs lying around the place...

If you like laughing at ineptitude, just try and hold a sensible conversation about 'puters with any of the staff in high street electrical retailers or try calling up a support line and getting an answer other than "update drivers", (though I think that's an impossibility).

There was a "'puter night" on one of the network channels not too long ago, (I think it was channel 5, just before Xmas) that was offering the "latest, greatest PC" as a prize. It came with a stunning 640kb of memory accoring to the presenter...

Yep I get a fair few people asking me questions on the help desk. And the way people get things the wrong way round often brings a smile to our faces

Ah yes, Time computers.... how you may laff at all this.

I have own my Time computer for almost 3 years now, tis a Cyrix, but still performs reasonably (shall be begging for an Athlon soon though).

not being in a position to install my own parts (fear of static) I always sent the computer to the local Time outlet in Cambridge. and now, the complete, hilarious serice history (and events resultant of it) for you all to laugh at
smile.gif

1) 8x CD Rom packs in. Sent to head office for engineers assesment. Replacement granted. Reason "Too much dust brought in from the fan". No 8x made any more so we get a 16x.

2) Brand new spanking 8 meg Diamond VII (160 quid, bought a week into release). Send to TIME for fitting.
Fitting is fine. However, they damage the cable to the CD ROM in the process of fitting in, therefore a few weeks later it goes back when the CD ROM cuts out. (Technical bloke on phone says "How confident are you going into the back of the computer"... Technitial thinks: "Go in the back, touch it, invalidate the warrenty, sod off).

3) PC goes back to have new (this time 32x) CD ROM fitted. Not bad for a free upgrade

.

4) I purchase a new MS Sidewinder GamePad. Shove it into the ESS on mobo soundcard and it ignores it. Phone TIME. "Ah, no, your soundcard isn't compatible with digital controllers" (fair enough).

4b) I buy a new Diamond S90 PCI soundcard. TIME fit it. however, because the old Soundcard is on the mobo, it cannot be removed. They delay returning the PC because they are having "technical troubles" installing it.

4c) Get PC back to find that there is a hardware conflict which is disabling the SoundBlaster emulation. Spend half an hour and manage to fix it myself. Time spent 3 days.

4d) Discover that the CD audio will only play out of the right speaker. (eg, plugged in wrong). TIME say: "We had to plug it in through the graphics card". This may be because the original soundcard and the graphics card are on the mobo together. However, it is still a pretty dumbarse way of saying "The cable wasn't long enough". I am yet to send it back after 6 months as I fear the consequences.

4e) Last summer, during a reinstall of Winblows, I have to reinstall the drivers for the aforementioned Soundcard. I discover, to my amazement, that it came with software. Aureal tests, Midi enharncement and set up.. generally cool. t'was absent when TIME sent it back to us.

5) Not so much of a big one, but: after about 2 1/2 years the monitor blew out. One minute it was working, next it wasn't. Yippe.
Took at least a week to get a replacement.

Sadly the Cyrix processor is yet to pack up. DOH!

-----------

Well, does that sum up TIME for us all? Sadly yes. Will I be buying from them again? Thankfully, no.

Oh hell that is funny!

WHAT?! u dare insult me?! of course i have tonnes of stuff lying around!!!

I have about 2 full height cupboards full! drives my missus up the wall. Actually tbh i didnt think about splicing 2 cd audio cables together

/me gets soldering Iron out....

I used to work for a Company called M Squared, one time this guy came back in screaming that his CD writer no longer worked after 1 weeks of useage....

we take it out the back, and press the cd eject button.... Lots of whiring crunching of gears, door wouldnt open.

after about ten minutes i pry open the tray to be faced with the nice blue looking front on the out side was brown and sticky on the inside...

a lick of my finger, run it along the cd writer... hmmm coffee.....

Went back out to customer with the CD tray open, and litterly he screams "WELL?"

I said well im sorry sir, but your cd writer has died of caffine poisoning....

Did he say a word? Nope. Just complete silence.

hehe.

Time computers wouldn`t let me buy a laptop on interest free credit - the b~@tards, its cos they found out I am a student and the operator goes "well I have 4 kids and I know that students don`t have any money". Now I`ve ordered thru a company called dabs direct.Do they have some sort of reputation aS they still haven`t delivered the goods after 13 days (so much for the 3 day delivery guarentee)?
