Here's a series of screenshots pasted together showing exactly how much you lose/gain, when switching from one aspect ratio to another.

http://www.meepmeepvroom.com/daoc/daoc screen resolutions.jpg

As you can see 5:4 (or a resoltion of 1280x1024) gives the largest viewable area in DAOC, getting less as you progress through 4:3, 16:10 to 16:9.

Made this image to show other people how DAOC deals with widescreen resolutions. In DAOC people with 5:4 and 4:3 monitors benefit, in other games (like Supreme Commander and WoW (I think)), a widescreen monitor user will see more of the game world.

Hopefully this will clear a lot of the miss-information - and help people consider what monitor to use/get. :)

Addendum: I've added a demonstration of UI screen usage at the bottom of the image, showing how the UI interacts with resolutions. (It doesn't, actually. It just uses the same amount of pixels regardless of chosen resolultion.)

Which sucks up a lot of room if you aren't running on a decent resolution - Bigger really is better in this case.

Nice post, Tes. Will use it for reference if I get a widescreen. (Repped)
