This SPDIF on the back of my cdrom drive.
Also, the one located on my SB Live card
I bought the lead to join the two.
Now, can someone tell me what it does?

Digital quality CD audio...

You'll need good speakers to notice the difference though...

I dunno about any holes in the back of my CD-ROM drive what worries me is that there are holes in the middle of ALL my CD-ROM's. Now that is scarey!

Hmm spiffy cables or whatever they are called

Can someone tell me which way up they go though. Sounds like a stupid question I know but as it seems to fit either way up on my CDROM drive dies it matter which way it is in

Although by the sound of it, it wont matter much -- my speakers were £15 IBM from a show
:-(
(How do you get those smiley / unhappy symbols on this thing !)

I think (Emphasis on the think) that you have to go to multimedia properties --> cd music --> enable digital audio for this cdrom device.

Also, I think (again, emphasis on the think) that you need win98 for this...

SP/DIF is not AC3.

AC3, or Dolby Digital Encoded Sound, is a method of audio compression/transmittal/encoding.

SP/DIF is a type of digital interconnectivity (via a SP/DIF cable) between two devices that support digital audio transmission.

Any device that supports digital input/output will either have an SP/DIF connection, or a straight co-axial digital in/out.

The SP/DIF connection on your CDROM is digital out. This goes to the digital in, on the SBLive card. However, the SBLive card can only shunt that digital signal to the daughter card (not supplied with the 'value' edition).

This signal is then piped through a standard co-axial digital out connection.

So, at this point, you have a nice, fat digital signal. The question is, do you have the equipment to decode it? (ie. An AC3 decoder, either integrated or separate from your amp).

If not, you are stuck with standard 256bit output from the stereo jack on the back of the main SBLive card. If you do (like I do) you have the potential for 5-9 channel sound.

Now, onto speakers.

Digital audio is a misnoma. You may have fantastic source media, full digital interconnectivity and processing, but, at the business end, everything goes back to good old analogue.

There are 'NO' digital speakers on the market that can deliver 'digital sound' that you can hear. Its a clever marketing ploy (ie. they have a digital processor in each speaker cube, so making them 'digital speakers') -- BUT the sound you hear is from a digital - analogue converter (DAC).

Hope this clears things up
