Thinkin of gettin a new mouse...

heh its been a while since i set foot in this forum, but anyway, i currently have a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer v3, but have been getting pissed off with the "weak" mouse wheel that it has. I found that its not only my mouse its effecting, but everyone else who ive spoken to who has this mouse has said the same thing.

Anyway, someone introduced me to the Logitech® MX™700 Optical Mouse, it was a Cordless one too, so i was interested, only thing was when i did a few price checks online i found that it was gonna cost way over £50 to buy it, then today i found that they have a Corded version called the Logitech® MX™500 Optical Mouse, this was over £20 cheaper, its exactly the same as the MX700 apart that it has a cord, so i thought "yeah ok that one sounds more feasilble".

But then i seen that there is a Dual Optical mouse floating around, the Logitech MouseMan® Dual Optical, its apparently twice the speed of the MX500/700 but it doesnt seem as comfy as them. It costs roughly the same price as the MX500 so what to do?

Do i go for comfort or do i go for speed? and if anyone has any other ideas on mice throw em in, im willing to look into em at the moment.

***Also, the MX500/700 is something like 800dpi resolution, and the Mouseman is twinned, so its 2* 800dpi.***

That is all ;)

Hi Super_Gray

I too have the IntelliMouse Explorer, though I quite like it, despite the fact the paint effect is wearing off ;) That said, a lot of people love Logitech's mice. Certainly in terms of quality, I've yet to hear of any bad reports about Logitech's kit. Whether it's worth the extra money to 'unwire you life' ™ is purely a personal question.

Comfort is great importance when it comes to mice, as uncomfortable products can cause serious medical conditions when used for extended periods of time (Repetitive Strain Injuries, rheumatism, reduction in blood circulation etc). Whilst the Mouseman may have double the resolution, which will undoubtedly yield improved precision, whether this precision is noticable is another matter. If you can, check the resolution of your current mouse. If you're happy with it's precision, then you'll be in a better position to judge what's acceptable for your new mouse.

There are two things to bear in mind with wireless technology, however: battery life and wireless format. Some mice eat batteries like you wouldn't believe, and rechargable batteries (though I have no idea if this is true) are said not to offer the same level of durance as their non-recharagable equivilents. Thankfully Logitech's mice now seem to come complete with a holder which recharges an internal battery whilst the computer is idle: an ideal solution.

Secondly, the wireless technology is of some relevance for obvious reasons. Infrared is the most popular standard, although it has a limited range and effectively requires line of sight. If your desk happens to be cluttered then this can be a problem should the receiver become covered. If you want to work at a distance from your PC, then the distance may (though it's unlikely) become an issue. Bluetooth is now becoming more popular a standard, and solves both the above problems (~30ft range, no line of sight required) although such products are currently very expensive.

Anyway, I'm rambling on, forgive me. In short, I've heard good things about Logitech's range of mice. Whichever you choose, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Kind Regards

Though I don't advocate porn, I agree that a comfortable, wireless mouse sounds like the ideal solution :D The MX700, expensive as it is, sounds like an amazing piece of kit. Having just search edthrough some reviews, the general consensus was overwhelming positive.

Be sure to let us all know what you choose and how you get on with it.

precisely which is why i dont browse it.................................

My desk is very cluttered anyway, wires, papers, and all sorts of peripherals so wireless wouldnt really be ideal, which is why im probably thinking of going the MX500 route.

Ive looked at a few reviews just now on the MX500 and what concerns me is people are having a bit o' shit with the Drivers, oh and also there is problems with gettin the extra buttons to work in games, slight concerns...

I have absolutly no idea what the resolution/dpi is of the mouse i currently have is, ive checked the MS site to no avail and also asked a friend who has a retail version to check his manual et al, but it didnt offer anything in there about it.

ack :/

/edit

this site has lots of user reviews, they seem very interesting... i read a lot more down the page that there is more problems than what i mentioned... heh having second thoughts on this mouse, but i'll make a proper decision in a few days after more reviewing and so forth :p

I'd go for the corded one for game playing, Ive had a couple of wireless mice and I have found them unrealiable.

Fourth and fifth button support is largely down to the games themselves, as opposed to the mice drivers. When the IntelliMouse Explorer was first released, the thumb buttons could rarely be used in games (you actually had to bind the buttons in Windows to specific keys, and then bind those keys in game to the desired function). Thankfully, as the mice have become more common, this has become less and less of an issue.

The MX700 is meant to be a good gaming wireless, although I don't think I would swap it for my Intell Explo :)

I replaced my Intellimouse Explorer with an MX700, and it is wonderful...no different from a corded mouse for game-playing, and recharges when I'm not using it. Well worth the money.

not everyone is a fan but i wouldn't swap my boomslang for anything else now, took a while to get used to it but once you do it feels great and is very precise, the new version should be released any day now and they also have the proper xp drivers on the official site.

boomslang 2500

the price has also come down while the dpi has gone up :)

MX700 unless you're left handed. It is a lot more responsive than the MS cordless mice - in fact all Logitech cordless mice seem to be (dunno whether that's a difference in technology or not, but it's what I tend to find even just on the Windows desktop).

Sorry but I found the Boomslang overrated when it came out, then add the fact it costs more than most mice leaves me finding it hard to justify.

I've still got a intellimouse explorer v1 and apart from the silver paint effect having faded from most of the mouse it's still in perfect working order, atm i wouldn't think of changing it for anything, altho I am very tempted by microsoft's bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo.

The bluetooth one is nice but I would only get it if it could be stuck in a recharging unit, like the MX700.

Very true :) And I believe Microsoft are utilising a proprietary standard of Bluetooth, which requires specific, instead of generic, hardware :( That said, it does look rather cool :)

Unfortunately, yes :( Or if not, Microsoft's hardware is nevertheless incompatible with existing products . . .
Microsoft Wireless Optical Bluetooth System Requirements
Important You must remove any installed Bluetooth transceiver device and remove its software in order to use this product.
This is a real shame, especially if your PC, or particularly notebook, has Bluetooth integrated. In fairness to Microsoft, their hardware can support up to seven devices, but still, it's a shame you have to disable/remove your existing kit. And as Embattle rightly says, there's no holster, which means the whole package requires 4x AA batteries :(

Kind Regards

Knowing microsoft it'll work with normal bluetooth installed but to get the "added" fuctionality of special hot keys you'll have to nuke all other bluetooth installs and put on their own software.

heh. to me that reeks.

ooh ooh we've made it all bett0r!!!1 you just have to uninstall this and install that. oh, and every non-microsoft bluetooth appliance will no longer function....but it's cool!! it has a web hotkey!!

even apple doesn't do that ffs*

*not exactly true

Apparently the whole product will not work unless you use their hardware. When you think, it's quite simple. Just disable or remove your existing Bluetooth transceiver in the control panel, install the Microsoft one, and you're set. But it is a shame it doesn't 'just work' ™ (a Microsoft trademark, would you believe?).

i've got a mouseman dual optical, and whilst its a damn good mouse, doesn't skip at all(except when you get crud over the sensors :/ ) its a little small, whilst my hands arnt overly large, i find that my wrist hangs over the back and it can get quite painful after a few hours :/

next one i'm having is the mx700. it is indeed the daddy.

Just for completeness, I got an MX700 for my birthday (way around the expense) and I swear by it.

It's very comfortable, the extra scrolling buttons are RSI friendly, and yes, games performance is very very good.

I know I'm not the most dedicated gamer anymore, but I has a play around on UT2003 (demo) and it was absolutely fine. No lag whatsoever (as older wireless mice suffer from). My previous mouse was an MS Wheel Mouse optical.

If you can afford it then it's fab. 2x AA rechargables provided and a sexy holster for charging are provided :)
