Thermaltake mem cooling kit worth doing on GF2mx ?

Hi

My Hercules 3D Prophet 2 MX 64MB, is a very nice card silent with a HS on the GPU,

It's getting a bit long in the tooth now, so I decided to overclock it just to see what it could do.

Using Riva Tuner, I managed to overclock the core from 175Mhz to 220Mhz.

However because the cards memory has no HS on them, I could not overclock the memory clock ( only a few Mhz)

Therefore I can only improve my 3dmark only by about 50, I'm told you can overclock any Graphics card core & memory by 10%

Should I buy the

Thermaltake memory cooling kit

Only I'm not sure which chips on my GF2mx is my memory, and also what kind of overclocking potential can I expect.

Additionally if i bought a thermaltake crystal orb as well, will I have to take HS of the GPU first.

Or should I just buy a decent card :D

I view it like....why bother on such a low card any way.

Agreed. Why spend money on improving a 3DMark score? You'll not notice any 'real' improvements. I'd suggest putting the money you would have spent into a 'Ti4200 Fund'.

Summo I have a abit kt7a v1.2 like you, and it's pretty likely judging by your's & ono's problems that If I upgrade to GF3 or 4, that'll i'll only be able to run it in agp 2x

I reckon the card will be using more power on 4x, so my 300 watt psu will need to be replaced. I read an article in micro mart a while ago recommending 350+ watt psu's for 1ghz + Gf3 systems.

Surely it's not worth buying a gf3 if i'll only be able to run it in agp 2x , should I get a gf4 mx460 instead,

Bleh don't mention gf4200. Mine wa supposed to come Friday, well it did come to my front door BUT the bloody delivery guy went b4 i got to door :(

I got up nice and early, about 8:45 i was upstairs but heard something coming through letterbox and then someone running down the street. So i go and look and its a missed delivery note. I swear he didn't knock and just put the note through, so close and yet so far, taunted by the delivery bloke :)

seriously though, you can pick gf4200's for £120-140 well worth it for that money, instead of overclocking a gf2mx. IMO GF4mx's are a waste of money, just glorified GF2mx's :)

Amen to that. GF4MXs *are* glorified GF2s. I'd say don't waste the money, get something like a GF3TI500, it does the job- and then some- and doesn't cost the $400 + that the GF4TI costs.

"So how's DOOM 3 going on that TI4600?"
"35FPS, sir."
"What? That's a 2.4 GHZ system!"
"I know, sir. What do I do?"
"Software render it and see if it does any better."
"Yes sir!"

EDIT: $400 comes straight from the latest TigerDirect magazine.

Its only about £150 over here ($300?)

Again pointless getting a GF3 ti500 when you can get a gf4 ti4200 which is better than a GF3 ti500 for basically the same price.

Yeah, it does seem strange about the AGP thing. :/ I've not noticed it mentioned anywhere else on the Interwebby but here. I swear, though, I've not seen any noticeable difference between AGP x4 and x2. Ono and I have different motherboards, so I wouldn't assume that you'll get this problem if you upgrade your graphics card.

When I was trying to sort this problem I bought a brand new 400watt PSU but the problem remained. I'm now using my original 300watt PSU and power isn't a problem, despite my two 7200rpm SCSI drives, two IDE devices and SCSI backup unit. I wouldn't fork out for a new PSU if I were you, I honestly don't think you'll ever need it.

I agree with the others... don't get a GeForce 4MX. Honestly fella, a Ti4200 is worth the extra £20 over a GF3.

*wierd*

If you're using GF4 you'll want to use win xp, trust me on this
Xavier

I'm using win 2k, will I still get the problem if I gf3 instead

summo which o/s are you using ?

Is this a bug? or a good reason it won't run in agp x4 ? There must be millions of happy gf3/4 owners, otherwise we would have heard about it.

I use XP. I believe Ono uses 2000, but I could be wrong.

ok

a few things

the difference between AGP4x and AGP2x is a 50% drop in bandwidth across the AGP, that being said unless you play wolfenstein at 16x12 with quincunx you won't notice it...

putting ramsinks on a GeForce2MX is akin to fitting a two foot spoiler to a robin reliant - it won't help performance at all with current titles and worst case means a fookered card.

GeForce3Ti is a real mystery price wise these days, since the announcement of geforce4 etailers can't shift them and so I've seen Ti500's going for anything between £100 and £200 over the last week. GF4Ti4200 is soooo vastly superior to Ti500 that it really is a no-brainer... don't pick ti500 over ti4200 unless it's being given away, you'll kick yourself when you get ut2003 :D

I'd go along with that, I used to play B&W on a agp x2 p3 500 with a 12MB Voodoo, which was dissaponting :(, so I bought my gforce 2mx after asking ppl on forums was was the best, tho ultra was the *daddy* then. I saw 64MB Hercules card for the same price as a 32MB at a computer fair and I couldn't resist, so for £110 I snapped it up. Anyhow I didn't know about agp then, but it made B&W look superb yet still still running in agpx2 . Albiet now on my agpx4 duron850 it runs a bit smoother but not much better looking.

Regarding the ti4200, it seems the card to go for, as there is a massive leap in performance & price to the ti4400 &4600, which look very similiar.

Pricing is a mystery the mx460 sells for £120, yet ti 200 are being sold for less. I've seen ti4200 knocking about, with 128 MB for £40 more than the 64MB, I guess this card will be best.

I wanna know... what do you do to get this Hardware?

Do you send em an Email asking them you wanna "Review" their stuff? Do you have to give em back after so long?
