The Summer Campaign and Events

Just a thought on the ongoing "campaign".

We all know all 3 realms are getting new NPCs dropping new clues, and a fair few hours and brain cells have been used up trying to decode what they have to say.

Has it occured to anyone that it doesn't really matter though. The Events are obviously on a timetable and if we decoded the clues on the spot it won't affect the speed at which things happen.
GOA have timetabled all this and when things do start moving forward, if ever, its going to be down to random chance as to which players are going to be lucky enough to be involved. There's nothing we can do to influence things, all we can do is blindly follow GOA's script.

It is a good idea and decoding the clues is fun, I just wish we were active participants instead of a passive audience.

All games at the moment are Linear if there is a story line involved.

The real art is creating the feeling that the game isn't Linear, something best shown on games like Grand Theft Auto 3.

Don't be fooled though, if for instance you carry out actions against NPC's you're not supposed to, you'll shape the way the story goes.

I think Brannor explained it best when he wrote:

Epic events, well, now we're talking. Ever make a choice that will forever alteryour realm's faction to a specific faction? Can you handle that responsibility? How about giving up a relic to a mage that needs it in a spell? Could you do it, not knowing what could happen to it? How about, killing one creature that begged for mercy, and having the dragon pay you a visit? Or, chosing not to help someone, and have a L60 assassin stalk your guild for a week or two?

The story has been wrote and planned. It is Linear. Your actions will change the way the story progresses though. For the moment, like you said, just enjoy the build up and the clues.

Giving a relic to a mage..sure, I wouldn't hesitate for a second giving midgard or hibernian relic to a mage :D

Think about GOA's business aspect for a moment. They've had a lot of bad press over their handling of DAOC, so to reverse that and get the players on their side again they need to involve as many as possible in the Events.

Which means they'll all take place at primetime on the servers. Figure evenings, Mon - Fri between 7pm and 11pm UK time.

I do think they've shot themselves in the foot a bit though. This is the time of year when most people go on holiday. Imagine coming back from the Costa Stella sunburned and hungover only to find the biggest event in your DAOC career has passed you by....
Hopefully we'll get another one in the autumn / winter months.
