Helloooo I went for my birthday last June,
It was great they had this anamatronic t rex which was awesome. Before I went I went on their website a lot and checked out the exhibits etc, you can also print out the floor plans. We went in the entrance round the corner (not the main one, but the one that brings you in to the bit with the big planet in the lobby) because there was a queue a mile long for the main door (which leads you straight in to the dinosaur bit).
You can get food and stuff there but we took our own snacks and stuff because the lines were just silly and if you are taking your little'uns they may not be willing to wait for their grub! (I wasn't lol) also it's quite expensive.
They also do daily lectures there and if you time it right you can sit in on one, there is a thing on the website called nature online or something anyway that is a broadcast of the lectures.
I went about 2 years back and loved it The Natural Science Museum is wank though. Seriously if the History Museum is randomly closed, push your kids in a puddle over taking them to the Science Museum.
Ez's advice (as always!) is sound - avoid the main entrance if you can, that said it being a weekday you're considering it shouldn't be a problem. Plan what you want to visit though, the whole place is massive but some of it will appeal more than others, for example the geology exhibits are interesting maybe to adults, but cases and cases of stones don't get the kids going! The earth science section, with the earthquake experience etc. is always good, as is the dinosaur section (I believe the T-Rex is still there). So check out the sections from the webby and make your choices. The great thing about the place is you can theme it to projects or topics you might be teaching the wee ones, which makes it a great destination through a number of years.
