We are regular visitors with the kids - the bugs bit is pretty good and interactive and the mammals bit on the ground floor is a favourite too - lots of models of whales/moose/rhinos etc. etc.
The Robot Dinosaurs bit is very good but gets very busy - it has steps too so not so good for pushchairs - go to this bit first as the queue will only get longer.
My best tip tho is for lunch - the ground floor cafe's get incredibly busy but theres a cafe on the level below thats always very quiet and can even eat your own food down there.
The entrance is in the same coridoor as the bugs exhibition - just take the stairs down and you'll be at the door to the cafe.
Edit - oh and avoid the Volcanoes bit up the stairs in the main hall with the brontosaurus skeleton - theres some models of burnt people that traumatised my mates kids...
I echo the bit with the animatronic dinosaurs....but if your 5 yr old has never seen one before, be prepared for him to be a bit scared and have hysterics....its what I did as a kid when first confronted by one!
My favourite as always been the 'human' bits....where they have a 'womb room' you can walk into which is all dark, had a giant fetus all lit up in red and a loud heartbeat thudding away.....small children in general seem to be quite comforted by that room. They have all sorts of cool optical illusions and reflxs tests and little games and buttons to push there too....I also seem to remember they have giant climb in versions of things like an ear and lungs....but I could be remembering something !
