Argh I'm in a dilemma. I love Japan and the quirkiness of their games and their fooking odd culture. To me one of the quintessential elements of a good console is to have a fun quirky aspect, ie. some real character in the games.
I fooking LOVED my SNES. To date (and I've had consoles since the GRANDSTAND and Colecovision) this is the best console I've ever owned, probably followed by my Dreamcast. I used to get a shitload of imported jap titles and loved them all. Bollocks to graphics (which were good anyway) give me great gameplay and...dare I say it...FUN.
Ok I've got an X-Box. Saying that on here isn't the wisest thing to do , but I like it. But...for all its great graphics and built in HD and all that bollocks...SNES totally shits on it from a great height. Sure, playing Ghost Recon with surround sound and quadrafuckingdynamiclighting is a blast, but playing Street Fighter 2 made me SMILE and LAUGH. Not think "Hmm thats impressive, next game please". It IS a good console imho but hasn't got that extra special something.
PS2? Well they seem ok just not what I'm after. Had a PS1 and it was ok for a bit. Can't really comment more.
So...in my quest for pure fun and laughs (mind that my DC has been used solidly since day 1 of EU release and has only just been put to rest) I got a 2nd hand N64 with a load of "name" titles. I played Zelda Majora's Mask for a day (I LOVED Zelda on the SNES), played Goldeneye for about 10 mins, tried Banjo Kazooie and Mario 64 for an hour or so...and havent touched the damn thing since! I cant really say why, the only thing I can think of is that because I came to it very late, I've since got used to X-Box, GC etc graphics. To me the N64 just seems like a crap copy of a GC which of course its not but playing them back to front like this has kind of ruined the experience. If I'd gone SNES - N64 I'd be amazed no doubt. It just feels retro without the fun.
I'm ranting now but anyway - so...GC can be picked up for £79 with a game from Argos. Gameboy SP is out now too. So why haven't I bothered? As Ono says PAL GC seems pretty fucked over by Ninty and the Gameboy Sp just...can't seem...to grab me.
Someone give me a bit of hope ffs. If I get a GC can I get some OBSCUREDAFTJAPDATINGGAMENO2345#1 and have all sorts of fun or will I be buying a console soon to drift off and wait in vain for the next...
Ramble there - suppose I'm bemoaning the current crop of consoles and games in general. Shoot me ffs
