Whether it's the constitution or not it really doesn't matter: someone had the sense to say "religion doesn't belong in school - faith teaching should come from church and the family".

I agree with that, its easy to lose sight of what this thread is about.

Its not defending what we believe in but if what we believe should be taught at schools.

ROSS: Ok, Pheebs. See how I'm making these little toys move? Opposable thumbs. Without evolution, how do you explain opposable thumbs?

PHOEBE: Maybe the overlords needed them to steer their spacecrafts.

ROSS: Please tell me you're joking.

I think the problem, tbh, is the whole believe thing. Creationism is something you believe where-as evolution is actually physical and real and posibble to see all around you.

It's an argument over wether beliefs should be taught in classrooms, not that there is already a belief being taught there. Evolution is not a belief.

Oh, but it is. Especially the way some people put it across. But either you believe the evidence, or you don't.

I'm not going to bother defending what I said because quite frankly I was in a pissy mood and despite the fact that to a certain extent I do believe what I said - there was no need to say it.

So there.

Aye tho tbh it does have a number of holes - it explains fairly well how small changes can happen over time but it doesnt really explain how some very narrow ecological niches get filled that would require multiple specific changes to produce anything viable. I think the process must occasionally make leaps rather than little steps but if this is true we might see it in nature somewhere - we should also see a lot of leaps that fail completely as a species throws up individuals that are poorly suited for survival.

On the disappearance of neanderthals and the other pre-humans, genetic studies have shown that there was interbreeding between homo sapiens and them so perhaps we inherited valuable traits from them. So they didnt really dis-appear but were merged in to form homo sapiens.

On the lack of human fossils - dinosaurs ruled on this planet for many millions of years yet the conditions required to produce viable fossils are so unusual that we still have big gaps in our collections and many species have only left a few fragments to say they ever existed.

Compared to dinosaurs humans have been around for no time at all - if we all died out today its quite possible that no fossils of humanity might ever be found by some future race - they might only be able to infer our existence from our ancient ancestors and the damage to the environment ;P
