lo all

I'm running Win98SE .. it works REALLY WELL for like the first month, then slowly but surely it styarts getting worse in performance and errors become more regular..

I'm gonna reinstall, so now my question:

What do you recommend for an operating system, windows based.

I want performance in all my games, like maxfps in q3 and cs.. etc etc, no graphics problems.

Right...

Is it Counterstrike thats running Slow and gets errors, or your Operating System?

Id recommend Win2000 as an OS, its highly stable, some people may also say try WinXP (Not tried yet)..

Also, do you mean Reinstall CS or your OS?

well, both really...

When I say I start getting poor performance, I mean that my games crash, programs crash, windows crash .. it eventually gets to the point that I HAVE to reinstall. All the games run fine, I think its with a lot of doing different stuff here and there, running this running that, closing this closing that etc etc... it just gets confused and starts crashing all over the place. I really dont think its the game thats at fault... weird really.

Im debating if I should do the XP thing.

what you think?

OK..

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools..

Go to DiskCleanup, and clear all the temporary files from the HD

Then do a scandisk, check to see if theres any bad sectors

Then do a disk defrag, just to sort out the HD

Also if you have a Virus Checker, run it..

Will take time to do all of them, if you cant be bothered then just do a format and reinstall everything...

but you siad it happens even after reinstallation..

All done .. I often run Reg Cleaner, scan disk, defrag, using AVG anti virus proggy, clear cashe, clear history, clear cookies.. etc etc

Maybe doing all this actually screws the machine up worse.. hmm..

Anyways.

/me still reading article

Well my OS of choice has been 98SE since its release, yes ive tried 2k and XP and they both gave me worse performance.
I,ve never had or never expect problems with my setup under 98SE, then again I only use intel CPU's and chipsets.
You pay for cheap hardware, you get cheap results :)

98 was built for far 200+mhz machines really. 2K requires more power indeed but when you actually run the OS you know your computer wont crash (as much :)). Tried XP and 2K, but 2K still comes out on top for me.

Funny that, Win2K I've found far more stable and reliable than Win98, and my hardware still runs what I want with no problems.

I'd rather lose 2fps and only reboot once a fortnight than have them back and have to reboot every 2 days.

Winxp is the way forward imho, if you turn off all the telletubbie shit and get all the updates then its a good stabel os.

You just need a fast pc with over 256meg of ram.

98se is crapola
2k is boring

install 2k Pro, if you don't get any speed hits (lower FPS, etc) then stick with it, its far more robust at dealing with things that Win98 is quite frankly utter pants at (application freezes, etc).

As for XP, although admittedly it boots up faster if you've ever had to ring up M$ for the friggin activation code you'd know why its gayer than Graham Norton & Ellen Degeneres secret lovechild.

I swear by XP, but seeing as you only have 128MB RAM then go for 2000. Once you get more than 256MB upgrade to XP. :)

XP my vote

I would say XP, cos im sure that win2k has that known crash bug with HL (the sound looping fella on AMD + SBLives).
Or it did with my anyhow, used to crash every other game with that looping sound, update to XP, all gone.
Only problem with XP that Ive had, is the mouse acceleration on by default, which needed command line stuff to get rid of under HL.

I use the highly unpopular ME and have no probs really apart from loosing my sound if my firewall detects something and minimises CS, I don't know if this an OS problem but its the only one I'm aware I have. I used to run 98se and for me ME is certainly an improvement and I can't afford win 2k pro. :)
