The Apple G5.

Has anyone seen the advert claiming that it is the Worlds most powerful home computer?

Is this true or is Jeff lying to us & will the Apple be getting a letter from some the solicitors of some companies like Alienware?

The G5 wanks all over alienware. Which imo is overpriced, daft looking crap.

Know of any independent opinions of this. I always thought the Mac machines were technically slower but they claimed that their operating system made them faster.

I used to know the answer to that question. Previously, Apple chips performed a larger number of instructions per clock cycle, so would deliver higher performance for lower speeds. However, the new chip appears to run faster (4GHz?), and the benchmark there is an industry standard benchmark.

And what is that super speed good for? Are Mac users gamers usually? Are there any games out for the Mac that will make use of that supposed monster performance?

"lolz!!1 i aer running my wurd processar at 2ghz dual m8!!1"

More games are coming out for the Mac, but video/image editing is the Mac's strong point. And you really want a fast processor for that.

Bugger I work with a Mac user and it looks like im going to have to bow down to him now. :(

I think it's something like this (but don't quote me on it):
Macintosh CPUs run using RISC - an instruction set (the range of operations the CPU can perform) which is significantly smaller than that used by x86-compatible processors. This means that more instructions can be performed per clock cycle, as the instruction decoding process is simpler, and the circuitry inside the processor is less complicated (fewer potential instructions = fewer components). This gives Macs a boost in simple operations (such as the floating-point calculations they, funnily enough, use as the benchmark). Such calculations are heavily used in graphics software, which is why Macs are the primary platform for graphics (can you say Photoshop, kids?)

I believe it also makes the processor churn out less heat.

Mentions "starting at $1999", but the specs concentrate on the dual 2Ghz CPU version which is $2,999

Now I reckon I could get a PC for under $2,999 that would crap all over that G5.

Anyways, Scooba already shot his load over the G5 in the Hardware Forum a few months ago.

Its all down to benchmarks, and it maye be the most poweful home computer yet. But look at the prices. And those prices are the base station without a monitor.

It will fail purely because of cost. Why take a hit to clock speed (which lets face it, is what the majority of people will care about) and pay more for it?

Correct me if i am wrong but, it wasn't the cpu that was 128 bit tis were the gfx.

Nope, you're correct. PS2 uses a 32 bit CPU and 128 (or maybe 256) bit graphics chip.
It's very similar to the way that my pc has a 32 bit Athlon in it, but the Geforce 4 has (iirc) a 256 bit GPU.

Regarding the Mac. The advert irritates me muchly. There is a bit of PC fanboy in me, though really not very much at all, so overlooking that: Selling the machine purely on the grounds of being "the fastest and [in slower voice] most powerful personal computer" is shite. The advert doesn't do anything to market the machine, other than it looking rather sexeh, and I wouldn't say no to one of those widescreen panels they use.

The most annoying bit for me is the "American superiority" voiceover.

Stangely enough, I wont be buying one, though if someone wants to buy one for me I shan't say no...

They are very well designed but in the real world, which people like Jobs don't live in, its not the fastest.

Apple are brilliant at making products that people think they need. After all, when they made the iMac, the choice was - gorgeous edible plastic design masterpiece, or clunking great big grey box.

Just a thought, shouldn't this be on the hardware forum?

Its a discussion rather than a question, so its fine here.

Besides, Macs are more about style than tech.;)

Gotcha, didn't realise tech forums were just for questions.
Although if I wanted to be picky.....

and style? screw style! if I can get a shuttle with a 3 gig pIV, a gig of ram, a radeon9800pro and a TFT screen for half the price of an apple then I know where I and I will be at bizatch :)

Apple invented the ipod which in my book makes them teh daddy. I would never buy one of their PCs though.
