That heavy thing

Seems the heavy thing is really getting popular, more so with columnists. But I agree, public server play just isn`t enjoyable anymore. Nowhere can you get an even sided game. So.. since we need to protect our public server users since that`s our bread and butter so to speak. What can we do? Is there slight modifications that can be done to stop heavy`s skiing so fast?
or other measures like a no camp zone similar to hunter around the nme gens and inv`s? That`s quite a good idea.

It's the game. All games progress. Expect people to go medium soon for some reason or other...you'll see

As far as I can see, the solution is quite simple, and can take one of several forms:

Make generators indestructible (along with, perhaps, inventory stations). Not turrets, oh no.

Make all items like turrets, INVs, generators repair automatically after 20 seconds, or 40, or 60.

Or, my preffered solution, make all gens and invs (maybe turrets, but then again, maybe not) repair themselves automatically, at a constant rate. Much slower than normal, so that human repairing is still a bonus, but so that they become functional after X amount of time.

please not, I dont think any of these should be introduced to team games, just public server sessions.

Oh, or you could just release a 1.9 patch which sorts heavy skiing to to Manageable (not zero) levels. If Dynamix plan to do this in Tribes 2, why not do it now?

simple answer increase max player limit to 32

10-16 a side games on public servers are very fair and more balanced.

Let me tell ya a story

Last month I was playing on the wolfie server with loads of top players from AV, mno, TNT etc. The level changed to Stonehenge, and shortly after the match started I noticed at least 5 opposition heavies skiing over to attack our base. Needless to say they wiped our base out and went a couple of caps up. Our gens weren’t down for long though and we were soon throwing loads of heavies at their base, with me, fusion + a few others skiing over. We were able to get their gens out and with some chap called Avalanche flag running we when 5-2 up. However we couldn’t keep them at bay for long, and they came back to level the match 5-5, which was how it finished.

Despite all these heavy attackers nether sides gens were down for long thanks to some really frantic defending. I remember that match because its one of the best games I’ve played in on Stonehenge.

There was certainly no alias lama walking into the unguarded enemy base with a shield pack in order to camp it to rack up a high score.

How to solve heavy skiing for those who hate it with the quick and simple mods listed below

a)Fake Generators. They look destroyed but they’re actually working

b)Randomly disappearing generator. It keeps disappearing and respawning in different places every 10 seconds

c)Make a player turn into the generator, ‘I am the generator’

d)Make a heavy going into the enemy base turn into a light

e)Player going heavy automatically has his key settings changed

f)The ground is constantly changing shape making skiing impossible

g)Player going heavy is automatically kicked from server

h)Generator can fire mortars to defend itself

Here you go, I’m sure any one of these will improve the game tenfold

Personally, I like E and H best. :p

Very soon I'll be administrating some servers, and I'll be experimenting with indestructible generators, and larger team sizes..... be patient myc children ;p

It prolly doesnt work in bigger games coz lag and framerate go bad making it imposs.
32 player games suck.

Not on good servers

Had some brilliant games on won.net and teamplay.net servers.

Not really, the problem with 32 player games is the sheer amount of info the client has to deal with, via the modem and your poor little cpu. If youve got adsl, or even isdn, 32 players is fine bandwidth wise, but a modem is really pushing it.

How about making it 20 clients and see how it goes. The servers are normally full most of the time so the extra room would be nice

Design more maps like Dangerous Crossing where the gens are hidden somewhere.
That will make it harder for heavies to destroy them
have more stations well separated.
i.e. not a map like stonehenge where one shielded heavy can screw your gens and stations.

Or how about make one gen power both bases

We could just stop the different armour classes altogether so everyone is on a level playing field, remove the generators so one team can't be put at a disadvantage, take out the inventories for a similar reason and just pick up the weapons and ammo from around the map... While we're there we may as well remove the turrets as they can prevent flag grabbing, and skiing should go too - in fact it might be easier just to move the maps inside so people can't ski away from the flags...

Finally we could turn off some of the lighting, flatten the maps out - and remove uneccessary stuff such as sensors and the like... We could also change the skins and perhaps just have a blue and a red... I suppose once we've moved it all inside there isn't much need for the jet pack either, and with nothing to repair etc the whole pack concept could just be replaced with power-ups strewn about the map...

Hmmm

What really needs to be done and noone can argue about is a slight reduction in heavy skiing ability. Since Dynamix refuse to tackle it and we can`t from a mod point of view I reckon a clean and simple way to make public server life more enjoyable is a no camp zone around gens of about 15 feet or so. Over the last few weeks its very apparant our scene is getting smaller, less newbies coming in, you can`t buy tribes in the shops anymore, UT`s grabbing folks. Something needs to be done (and pokers the man to do it) :E
There`s no argument here. Heavy gen camping has to stop. The quality of public HAS to improve or we`ll have no game and no players left come the time TX is out.

you've hit the nail on the head there Mongrol.

We've all been on the servers where if you stay off the map for too long, it starts to take your energy off. So why can't we do this with enemy heavies in the base?

Seems a good idea to me
