I just wanted to thank the guys who post valuable tech info here. Although I am reasonably techy I don't have the time to trawl all the H/W review sites, plus you guys actually have the kit and use it day to day, much more useful than a "one off" test.
I've not posted any queries here because I answered my questions by reading existing posts. I just bought an Abit mobo, 1700 athy, 512 ddr ram, to u/g my celery 500, gigabyte mobo setup.
Not fitted it yet, but I'm sure it will roxorx ma boxorx :)

Thanks peeps

Must admit I've played with the idea of the penguin for a while. Not because of any performance issues, purely because I hate the MS monoploy. Not switched yet though :)
Fitted the new kit last night, fast as fook compared to my old setup, love the mobo, no on board setup, multipliers etc, almost pnp.

Cheers peeps

Okily,
It seems that I'm overheating :) well my cpu is, 69 degrees ffs. I've found the problem, PSU sitting right on top of CPU fan unit, therefore fook all airflow. If I take one side off my case, remove PSU (now sitting next to case on desk, not ideal) it runs at 59 degrees.
Any suggestions? new case required?

ah ic, okily 250W Meico PSU ,Akasa icicle 765 HSU(bios tells me its running at 4,900rpm), . With the PSU out and side panel off its now running at 56 degrees.

The way I see it though, whatever fan I have on there it's never going to get any airflow, because the PSU sits millimetres away from the fan intake, blocking the airflow.
I've just been thinking about it, playing with the idea of mounting the PSU externally.

Here is a link to a basic guide on airflow:

http://www.tweak3d.net/tweak/airflowtweak/

My personal setup is like:

My PSU is:

http://www.enermax.com.tw/products/eg-365p-ve.htm

Basically it has two fans one which is near the CPU sucking air from the HSF then into the PSU and the back fan blasts it out the back.

I also have another fan below it that helps get rid of more heat.

I don't have the inflow fan active atm because it's not really required due to the cooler weather.

The later examples in the guide are only really for only ocing you might want to do.

I do believe that your HSF isn't that good, for one it doesn't even have a copper base. I personally have a Taisol CGK760092 CPU which has a copper insert. Although if you get the Taisol or the even better ThermalRight SK6 you should use a very small amount of Artic silver 2 as this is the best thermal paste around, not the shit that comes stuck to the bottom of the HS.

I currently have a Full Load temp of 48c.

hmm, alternatively you could go for the Alpha PAL 8045 like we have on our XP2000 rig - full load temps of 35C ;)

hmm, well I don't rate the taisol at all, and the SK6 only rules the roost with a 60x60x38mm delta which is a noisy lil beast...

go alpha!

yep, but with a fan it's 250g (50%) heavier than the alpha... and no cooler...

no, the mC462 isn't as good as the alpha - it's successor the MCX 462/423/478 is going to be an alpha beater but it aint here yet ;)

bit of a biased review - they're testing the swiftech with an 80mm ff sanyo denki and the alpha with a sunon- we tested both with the delta screamer and the alpha gets temps well below 30C ;)

I've got one on my xp2000+ @ xp2400+ / 1.85v around 32C ;) at 2000+ it is generally between 28-29C :D

I would personally not put such a fan on it, due to noise :)

Alpha it is then :)

You may not have it sitting well on the processor, have you removed it and place it on again?

If you try make sure you've got some AS2.

I'll be back laters.

OK, i've been checking PSU's. They all seem to fit via 4 screws, one each corner. My existing PSU fits via a "lip" and only one thumb screw, am I missing something?
