TFT Monitors

I've finally got the cash to be able to afford a TFT monitor (primary reason for wanting one is to save on a little desk real estate). However, I don't want to waste my money, if the technology is still not up to the rigours of today's latest and greatest games.

So, firstly, do today's TFT's cut it with the latest games?

and

secondly, what are the best available models (17" +)?

for a good price (around $780 US) Samsung SyncMaster 770 TFT
is a good 17 inch tft lcd monitor.

If you have an ok amount and u want a big screen with good displaya and some cool features NEC-Mitsubishi MultiSync LCD2010X-BK 20.1-inch LCD Black Pivot Panel. I like how you can turn the screen portrait.

If you have a ton of cash Pioneer makes a PDP-502MX 50-inch Plasma Monitor but its $15,000 US dollars and I dont think ur lookin to spend that much. (I am almost positive this can be used with a pc from what ive read....u can also watch tv and other such things)

if possible "try before you buy" especialy if main use is for gaming, I've found the refresh rate on some TFT's a bit lacking.

Yup, the TFT's are LAGGY so as to speak. The more expensive ones however are improving. But I still think that a CRT is the only way to fly for a gaming rig. Grimes advice is spot on. Try it first, if it works for you then you know you can use it!

Beware of dead pixels when you get it, often manufacturers only fix / supply a replacement if the dead pixel is within certain areas of the screen!!!

And believe me there nothing worse than using a TFT with a dead pixel floating around!!! My 3 year old laptop got a few ya see!

Check before ya buy

Thanks everyone ....

I am considering buying the monitor with a new PC. Currently looking at systems from both Mesh and Evesham.

They both have 18" TFT Options:

Mesh - NEC Multisync 1830V TFT, and

Evesham - LG 882 LE TFT

I currently favour the Evesham monitor, as the specs for the LG monitor are 75hz Refresh Rate (vs 60 hz for the NEC) and DVI input (absent from the NEC). The one review that I have seen for this monitor describes it performing admirably with the most demanding of games.

Does anyone else have any further experience/knowledge of either monitor?

Looks like TFTs still remain something of a minefield (for the gaming fraternity at least). I guess the advice of trying before buying is the only real way of answering my query.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

The Vaio MX is alright, but if you want a tft system with decent 3d I'd just drop £2000 on a Toshiba Satellite 5000 with NV17m ;)

The TFT is getting on for 15" and supports.... 1600x1200 (ffs!) oh and a 1.1Ghz Intel Pentium III CPU :D

We've just got ours and it r0xx0r - expect a review next week!

P.S. Bodhi - don't even bother to mention Radeon Mobile ;)

Yes. And wait 8 months for nVIDIA to sort the bugs out, much the same as GF2Go.

BTW - I plumped for a NEC Multisync 1880SX, and so far I'm pretty pleased with the results.

18.1" viewing area is a great improvement on my 17" CRT ...
Viewing angle is good ....
  • 18.1" viewing area is a great improvement on my 17" CRT
  • Viewing angle is very good compared to the LG models
  • Contrast and brightness were again superior to the LG models

Thanks for everyone's opinions.
