telecomuting

Well i got another telecomuting day today and was wondering how many of you get that luxury aswell, how oftent and whats your job ?

I get then when there are trainstrikes, or when I am a bit sick, sadly enough headackes induced by spending to much time at the bar doesnt seem to count.
And I work as a unix System Engineer .

And I must say nothing beats sitting at home doeing same work while playing a game ;) and getting paid for it

Heh, i love working from home on the odd day. Blagging it saying my car wont start or that im ill but can probably do a few things from home.

I love working from home so much i told my boss on monday that im going to go freelance working from home full time from the beginning of august. I highly recommend it. Sitting in my pants at home with a beer and tv whilst doing the odd bit of work.

My opinion is slightly biast due to me moving to spain for a few months as well ;)

hehe, I must say I quite like the idea of working from home, but I'm personally not sure whether I'd be disciplined enough to actually get any work done. Sometimes I need that little bit of pressure to stop me from slacking, if that makes any sense?! hehe.

Right now I have that Simpsons episode in my head, wher Homer puts on weight so he can gain a disability and thus work at home, hehe.

Kind Regards

Serves you right for being Jame Bond's network administrator then... :p

As much as I'd like to some times, like Jonty I don't recon I'd be able to work hard enough - the lure of Barrysworld forums would kill my career, just as it is killing all the little hobbiest projects I was going to do this summer.

I'd also want contact with real people, the idea of cutting off from society may well be convenient, but I quite fancy some socialising in any future job.

Working from home is fine for the occasional day here and there, but doing it all the time for years on end sucks the fun out of life.

Are you speaking from bitter experience there? :(

Also, this new job of yours, how come you now post on Barrysworld more than when you were paid for it?

I am working from home right now !

I have an occasional work@home day now and again, in most cases it involves my son at school as most of the events take place at midday, I can't take an extended lunch break and a helf day is effectively wasted. Either that or when my wife has to visit hospital when its a bit unsure in what time she can get back. In both cases it is normally better I don't take a day off.

As my work is mainly development programming now, there is no real reason for my boss to complain, especially as he now works from home all the time (in the US). I'd love to move to a regular telecommuting job, maybe two or three days a week, I'd even take a pay cut to do it. They did clamp down on working from home a while back as a few contract staff in the department tended to take the piss, but most of them have been fired so its back okay now.

I do feel I get more done at home, I can concentrate better, and even though my travelling time is a short bike ride every day, it is way better spent working. My normal day consists of getting 90% done before around 11am, that is better when at home, there is no pressure to see you slaving away at the PC, just look at the result at the end of the day.

One day, work will be judged on what milestones you have achieved and not how many hours you have put in, my particular style of work has always been "work smarter not harder" and thats ideal for telecommuting. Unfortunately there are still too many anal-retentive bosses around who associate hours=work.

60% of my stuff is done at home, 'tis nice being able to work in the back garden with a laptop instead of a stuffy little room.
