Ok peeps, this week we're looking at some do's and don'ts of Friday News. Lets peel back some news and see what's under its fish 'n' chips wrapping.

The usual Friday News
[2004-20-08]

Ok bad start. Makes it sound humdrum. Usual? Nah. While we don't want to see "The Big Hooters Friday News" type of sensationalism (well, maybe - think target market, think hair appearing for the first time in strange places), some more spice is needed. Wordy titles are also bad so lets steer clear of "The Big Groovy Sensational Ooooh Aahhh Mega Friday News." Try things like "The Rather Raarsome Friday News" or something with a bit of bite but without the foaming dog fever.

While a big part of the team is currently at the Games Convention in Leipzig, there are still some of us sitting in the office and watching over your beloved game. Even so, there's little ground-breaking news, that'll be for next week. This week you'll get a little text on the Valkyn culture and morals, a little tip on artefacts and a chance to see a new employment opportunity open for the position of English Community Manager."

Hi, most of our staff are on the piss at an industry junket. This is good. Hints of all kinds of fun and indications that some of them do go out in daylight, even if its only to climb onto the GOA tour-bus. Promising, but not quite there yet. Valkyn and morals in the same sentence - just plain wrong. Everyone knows that valkyn piss on lamposts and will rut with anything that can move and several things that can't. However, "Your" beloved game? This should be everyone's beloved game and crucify anyone that dares to think differently. Say it once, say it loud, I'm a geek and I'm proud.

Live from the Games Convention

A lot of people have already visited the Dark Age of Camelot booth in these first two days of the Leipzig Game Convention ! There are even more people than last year, so records should be broken this weekend. A lot of players seized the opportunity to meet at last in real life, and our gaming duels have been a real success ! Matt Firor has just arrived today and has already met the press. His conference on Saturday, at 5PM is eagerly awaited. To make your way to the meet, find information about it on it's official homepage : http://www.gc-germany.de/ . In order to find our booth enter "Dark Age of Camelot" in the search function and follow the links to find the plan.

Booth? This sounds like a dodgy doorway in Amsterdam. Just what are you advertising to people here? This is a family show, you should be ashamed of yourselves. But since we're on the subject, what booth number was it? <coughs> Don't do booth. Call it a stand. Stay away from references to Last Stand, as this makes it sound like the company is going down, and not in the aforementioned doorway in Amsterdam.

To the point, all the info there. This is good. Only suggestion is that for profile you should be asking for perfectly chiselled features and good abs - given the nature of the average daylight-fearing DAoC player you cut down the number of unwanted requests massively.

Event characters

As you may know we run events on Excalibur and Prydwen every two weeks or so. These events are quests or missions scripted and run by GOA to bring the background of your realm to life and enhance the roleplay atmosphere. For these events we are often in need of volunteers to play special event characters who will be a part of the unfolding story of the event and will play their role in either helping or hindering the players. Previously these roles have been played by Gamemasters or by members of the Eyes and Ears team but we have decided to give more players the opportunity to be involved in events 'behind the scenes' as it were. If you are a keen roleplayer and interested in helping us, then please send an email to requiel@goa.com stating your realm, server and the names of your main characters. Please make the subject of your email Roleplay Volunteers. We can't promise that everybody who applies will get the opportunity to participate as an event character and existing E&Es will still be given preference for these roles however we would like to establish a pool of additional volunteers to call on when necessary.

Go you. Let the players in on it and show you're caring at the same time. Topnotch. Nothing to add here.

Background Piece : The Pack

Much to the distress of the old, the Valkyn customs are slowly being diluted with those of the people in the Alliance of Midgard. Nevertheless, the Valkyn packs still remain closely bound with their peculiar roles.

Traditionally the pack is led by the dominant couple, the only two allowed to bear offspring. If a young Valkyn has the misfortune of seeing the light of day from another female, it is immediately put to death and the culprit banished from the pack. That is a most terrible punishment as a Valkyn's raison d'etre isn't linked to their own personal accomplishments but rather to the accomplishments of the clan they belong too and this even beyond death.

Every spring the composition of the dominant couple may change. Some of the young from the pack will put themselves at risk by challenging the dominant of their sex and a terrible duel will then take place, for Kelgor's greatest pleasure. The worst possible outcome for the dominant would be to survive a duel that they have lost for even if they would still be accepted within the pack, the shame is such that many would rather end their lives there and then.

If up to now the customs and morals of the Valkyn are very similar to those of their Morvalt cousins, it is in their way of dealing with death that things start to differ. While the Morvalts believe that death is the will of the Matriarch and that the spirit of the dead goes to be joined eternally with Her, the Valkyn have a very different point of view. For them there is no spirit or individual soul, there is simply the Pack. The will of the Pack groups all the individuals that form it together and the survival of this group justifies many privations.

The role of the Bonedancers is therefore to ensure that even after death, the members of the Pack continue to serve it, firstly in the form of enchanted bones, and later as their magic has become more stable and powerful under the iron rule of the Ancient Trolls, through the animation of complete skeletons equipped with weapons and armour. The fact that these skeletons have remained animated for so long has caused them to begin remembering parts of their previous lives and personalities which is very disconcerting for the Valkyn as it is completely incompatible with their view of life and death.

That is why their beliefs are destined to evolve when mixed with the beliefs of the other races within the Alliance.

It would have sufficed to tell everyone to make sure they walk their Valkyn at least once a day and make sure they take their pooper-scooper out with them out of courtesy. Don't forget to include lots of marrow in their diet and for gods sake keep them away from onions.

Tip of the week
About Artifacts

Since version 1.69, you have been given the possibility to change certain artifacts (Spear of Kings, Crocodile Tooth Dagger, Malice Axe, Battler). You should be aware that if you change these artifacts then their experience levels will go back to 0. You should therefore think carefully about it before committing yourself to a change. In order to change artifacts you need to drag it over the Loremaster and he will offer you another. Sometimes the Loremaster's speech will be reinitialised and it may seem like you need to give him another set of scrolls and a non activated artifact. Do not panic because the Loremasters remember all the transactions you have had with them. Thus you can simply give him the correct keywords in the general /s channel to retrieve your new artifact. For example for the Ceremonial Bracers : The Loremaster gives you the choice between several artifacts. If for one reason or another you stop the discussion before making your choice, he will ask you for the scrolls and non activated artifact when you speak to him again. In this case all you need to do is to /s strength to obtain the strength based bracer from him.

Here's also a relatively unused method to help you in your search for the Atlantean Artifacts. When you start off on your journey for Artefacts and therefore the associated scrolls, you can read them using the /interact command and they will reveal clues as to what creatures defend the artefact and any special techniques that can be used to facilitate the retrieval of the Artefact… to study with care !

Nice one. Obscure yet useful. If I may be so bold however, when it comes to artifacts it may have been more useful to show people how to cheat when rolling in lottos for artifacts at the end of hunts and how to weasel the artifacts away from someone else who won.

See you next week with hopefully some exclusive revelations from Leipzig. Have a good weekend and good gaming !

And the same to you too! Except we, the players, won't be revealing anything as we fear prison cells with 240lb cellmates called Cecil.
