what speed am I after on a wireless network card, only seem to be able to find ones with 300mbps does that mean that aslong as my internet speed is below 300mb then the card will give me full speed? or is it likely to be a bit on the shit side?

also can I get something that will pick up the wireless signal that I can then plug both my PC and Xbox into without having to get a wireless adaptor for both? does such a beast exist?

300mbps is the maximum speed that the adapter can connect to a wireless access point or router. If your internet connection is less than that (and most people have a net speed slower than that), you won't be throttled by the wireless speed. There is a certain amount of overhead so you don't see the full 300mbps in the transfer rate, and obstacles affect the range and strength of the signal.

What you're asking for sounds like a wireless bridge. Assuming you have wifi with your internet router, you can pick up a cheap wifi AP such as this one:

What you do is use WDS to link the two wifi devices as a wireless bridge. This should allow you to connect your PC and Xbox via ethernet cables into the AP, the AP connects to your router in WDS mode, and your router provides internet access to every device connected to it (wireless or plugged in).

An alternative might be to get Powerline adapters to extend your cabled network. These use the copper of your electric supply to transmit a data signal between 2 adapters. You can pick up adapters in pairs, but this might fit your needs a bit better...

also, be aware that your card may sync at 300mb, but that may mean fa in relation to your actual speeds. if you have no reason to not have cat 5 or powerline then that's a good goal for chrimbo-gifting yourself :)
