Tax Disc craziness

My workmate got followed in by a police car this morning. Apparently her tax disc was on the wrong part of the window, and she got an instant £30 fine.

I know people have them in the lower left corner, but I didn't realise it was a legal requirement punishable by instant fine.

(Mind you, I am a bumpkin carspaz, this sort of thing escapes me at the best of times)

((I had to retype carspaz three times now because I kept getting it wrong :())

I thought you only had to have it "clearly visible".

Any idea why your workmate got "followed" ? I hardly think it was because an eagle-eyed copper spied the tax disc, even though that was the eventual outcome.

Actually it was, it was a highway car sat at a slow double roundabout about a quarter of a mile from here. He spotted her and followed her in.

(I was going to put it in petrolheads, but I wanted to see car-nonenthusiast reaction and see if I was the only one who didn't know).

Bumpkin pigs are the worst. The inbredness is strong in them.

Did I just say pigs? Oh well.

When and where to display the disc
A vehicle tax disc shows the registration number and the date up to which you have paid vehicle tax. It comes into force on the day it is issued. But, if you apply for a tax disc in advance, it comes into force on the first day of the following month and you should not display it on your vehicle until then. You must display this disc on the left-hand side of the vehicle's windscreen. If the vehicle does not have a windscreen fitted, you will need to display the disc on the passenger side. For motorcycles, the tax disc should be displayed on the near-side of the bike. If a side car is fitted to the motorcycle, then the tax disc must be displayed on the near-side of the handlebars or on the near-side of the side car.

Completely true. You put it (on a bike) on the front left hand side, or its not right. Petty to do you for it, but has happened loads of times.

Where did she have it displayed? That DVLA statement says "left hand side" of the windscreen, not "lower left hand side". (Personally I think even that's daft and overly-prescriptive; what if you drive a left hand drive car?)

It needs to be on the nearside so it can be read properly from the kerbside.

£30 fine, sheesh - a warning should have done it.

It's meant to be where Tom says, no questions - put it there and nowhere else.

I guess they were low on their quota of fines... :(

The bit that gets me, is that he followed her 1/4-1/2 a mile along the road, a small piece of dual carriageway and then into our business park before parking directly behind her when she got out, and then approached her. Don't they pull people over any more? Can they really be that bored?
