I aer going to get a new Tattoo!

It's been ten years since my last one, which no planning went into at all, and I wanna make sure things go totally right this time so can anyone give me any tips as to what I'm looking for in a parlour / artist? I'm not getting anything too intricate so I don't need a complete genius. Just don't want to get someone really dodgy!

Should they quote accurately before the work begins? Will they work from something I've designed? More to the point, is there anyone who can recommend anywhere in Basingstoke specifically?

Get a crudely drawn cock and balls with three spunk dribbles and five pubes done on your forehead. Great conversation starter !

Right.

Give me an idea of what it is you are having done and the placement (ie. wtf you want it on your body) and I'll take it from there mate.

First tho - please don't limit yourself to just Basingstoke. Its something permanent so you deserve the best, even if its not intricate - you still want it done by someone who really knows what they are doing and this doesn't mean having to pay through the nose.

I'll post full guide and shit when you let me know what you want mate.

A mate of mine did a black tribal cross, as in a christian(sp?) cross and it looks damn nice.

Almost any tattoo looks nice as long as its in black so don't do any with color, cuz it looks like shite.

I had a Dragon on my back a couple of weeks ago :)

I also have a Cobra on my left arm that goes from my elbow to my shoulder had that done a few years ago...

Il say one thing i forgot how much the damn things hurt.. but the pain came back to me real quick :)

Anyone who says Tattoos dont hurt are lying or smackheads who have just shooted up before going in..

Im one for getting Animals and stuff on me ive only got 3 tattoos (3rd being a panther)

Patterns are just too all the rage as of late.

Oh and as i was getting my dragon done some faggot was getting that David Beckham cross on his neck..

Dont get me wrong i like Beckham i just dont like idiots that have no imagination and copy what he does its sad and fucking gay imo

Almost any artist can do a good tattoo in black. To make a coloured tattoo look good, you need a good artist. But they can look so much better than black when done well.

It's just in black, a tribal looking phoenix rising from some flames. Top of my right arm above a circular wave pattern one that I have there. It's very nice and goes well with what's already there.

I don't particularly like the band but I saw the artwork for the new Ash album meltdown, fell in love with it and kind of used it as a starting point to come up with my own image.

The wings will wrap around the top of my arm.

Ok that's jsut too freaky, my friend just the other day said he was gonna get the exact same thing on his upper right arm.

Could it be the new tatoo cliché ?

Kinda like lasses with them on the small of the back.

I'm going to have changed it quite significantly by the time I'm done. It'll be unique...

Also the top right arm thing is because that's where my other one is. I don't mind fucking up one area on my body completely but I want to keep the other side unspoiled. for some reason.

Fair enough, i advised my mate to change it to his own styling but don't think he's having any of it.

I myself was thinking of getting one on the old upper arm, probably a lion head of my own design (star sign).

Or this on my back :

"Should they quote accurately before the work begins?"

Yes. On a piece such as yours they should anyway. You should get a ROUGH estimate of how much it will cost overall, it depends on how many sessions it will take. Different places have different ways of charging. Some will charge a set amount per hour, some will discuss the overall cost of a piece and maybe split the cost down per session regardless of hours taken. If being charged hourly a class artist will prob charge about £50 per hour, although some freehand artists can demand as much as £100-£150 but then freehand isn't everyone's cup of tea. Personally I charge per hour as I only do large heavy tribal blackwork stuff - such as full sleeves.

"Will they work from something I've designed?"

Yes. But if they are worth their salt they'll advise on how to improve your design and make it fit more with existing work (if the client had any that is).

"More to the point, is there anyone who can recommend anywhere in Basingstoke specifically?"

As I said in an earlier post - its wise to be prepared to travel a bit for the best. Some artists specialise in tribal work, some HATE it (I've been shocked to be present when an "artist" was bitching about how much he hated doing tribal - as he was inking my mate...). You want someone who actually gives a shit about what he's permanently inking on your arm.

Skin Deep magazine, Skin and Ink etc - pick em up from any decent newsagents. There are some decent artists in Bournemouth/Brighton/Worthing - they arent THAT far from you are they?

Its good that you know exactly what you want and have obviously thought about where you want it.

A major point is hygiene. The guy (or girl) inking you might be a great artist but if his hygiene is rubbish then walk out. The advice in that link someone gave earlier is a bit sketchy and inaccurate in parts although its not a bad stab at a FAQ.

The tattooist should be using a different pair of disposable gloves each time he has to break off tattooing (piss, smoke, phone, whatever). He or she should explain the hygiene rules there and reassure you they autoclave stuff blah blah blah. Its not just a case of the studio looking neat and tidy.

After the work is done and he applies the dressing (clingfilm with tape) - you should leave this on for 12 hours or so - NOT just one hour like that other link said (tsk!). Then carefully rinse the ink and blood off with warm soapy water. DONT RUB, just rinse it off slowly. Keep the tat out of sunlight as it will cause the tat to fade (first month is most important).

As for worrying - don't. You've already had one done so know what it feels like. It DOES hurt, depends more where on the bod you're having done of course (my elbow...ouch). Make sure you've had something to eat and no booze for 24 hours previous.

I use Savlon for aftercare and apply 4-5 times a day, not too much. Scab should start dropping off after 1-2 wks, fully healed in about 4.

Bottom line - if you dont feel right in the studio, then leave.

You could always come down to Lucky Devil here in Toronto - its a fkin "Tattooists and Barber's" ffs! I cant think of a more unhygenic combination!

oof its 6:30am, better go :)

Hope this helps, ttfn
