O.K. New question for you chaps. My PC is a bit slow and crap now 950 duron 512 meg ram. So before I bite the bullet and upgrade (I don't really need massess of power, I'd just like to speed the whole thing up a bit) can you tell me which of these SHOULDNT be running all the time? It seems a bit full to me.

I'd like to know which ones I can close and also how to stop them from starting again.. Thx in advance.

If you do a google search on some of those, it will bring up various websites that are devoted to telling you what each program does, and which you can remove.

WinZip Quck Pick (the WinZip System tray icon) can go f you don't use it.
Correct Connect can - I believe - be disposed of as it is not a required part of a broadband connection. We have it on NTL back home, but I know people running home networks and so don't use it. Assuming you have a standard network port set up (rather than plugged in USB - in which case I don't know whether you need it or not). "Try it and see" might be a good idea...

Qttask is Quicktime's system tray icon. You can disable that somewhere in the QT options.

Mixer will be a soundcard thing. If you have extra sound software running that you don't want/don't need you can disable that.

Netscape 6. Mozilla does eat up a lot of memory - it's one of the supposed downsides. The browser will start up slower if you disable "Quick Launch" in preferences, but the system start up will be quicker, and it wont be resident in RAM. You kinda have to weigh it up.

And I don't know about the others.

One thing would be to check your system tray. Anything in there that you never click on, try and get rid of it - or at least find out what it is!

You don't need eye running all the time, make sure it closes rather then minimises when u click 'close'

Mixer as has been said, probably a soundcard thing, and probably unneccesary

Barrylogon - unnecessary, just navigate to the barrysworld webpage before you play on a server, and that should work fine (if you have a static IP)

pctspk.exe could be a modem driver - http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=latit_modem&message.id=3514

Do a google search on each one, include the file extension.

This is a piccie of my taskman, just to compare so you know what tasks tend to be common between computers

BTW do you know where in the registry to go to stop programs from running during boot? I think (from memory) its local _user>software>microsoft>windows>run or something similar

If you run the "msconfig" program in start->run it brings up a window where if you go to the right most tab on the top, it gives you a list of programs that are run during startup. (Win 98, Win XP and Win ME only. Not 2k, NT or 95)

You can untick the ones you dont wat to run. Usually there is stuff for Norton AV for example that you will need, but quite often theres stuff that sneaks in like Quick Time, Real Player and
sometimes some stuff that reminds you to register for programs in few weeks.

If you are unsure, google about for the executable name. You will usually find a page that explains what it is.

/Edit: This page explains it better than me... MSCONFIG

Holy bafuckinjoley! Yours are worse than mine!!

And re: firewall: who cares? Help yourself. cba :)

Thx for the help. I have another question too :)

I want to run another computer and share the tinternet. I'm on NTL and I suppose they don't like you doing it?
What's the best way to do it? They both only really need to run C.S. type games.

I tried to connect two before but had probs which I think was down to using two different OS - win 98 and 200 etc. Should that matter? They wouldn't recognise each other

Quite easy to run 2 pc's if you have network cards I think, but you dont do you?

Our local friendly, smelly dwarf can get you another NTL modem and you run off a splitter, they were £60 I think.

This happens to all my threads :(

Is it me do y'think?

Anyway my cable dsl is USB_in so I think I need the 1st pc to have a network card and then just connect to the other with network card. Would different OS make it any harder?
