Taking off Geforce4 MX (noisy) fan

I have a geforce4 MX 440 and recently the fan on the card has become very noisey, and rattly sounding. Would it be a problem if I removed the fan? (as far as overheating...). I have two large fans on the outside of the case, but the fan on the graphics card is extremely noisey and rattles a lot.

Would the card be likely to overheat and crash without the fan? The fan has already fallen off once (when i took it out the box) so i wont damage the card in removing the fan.

It would probably overheat and die, the fan is there for a reason. Try removing the fan and getting some grease into the bearings. Or you could by a replacement fan.

hmm, should Fans actually come off when you pick them up? especially out of the Box, i would have taken it straight back to where ever i got it, and asked for a replacement

Buy a replacement and don't run it without a HSF.

Just one of the clips clipping the fan onto the card kind of slipped through the hole - after clipping it back on though it hasn't come off. I got it mail order and didnt want to send it all the way back.

I remember seeing other Geforce4's for sale without a fan on them, so this was my main reason for asking. I'm gonna try wiping the dust off and oiling it (any particular kind of oil?) and see if that helps.

I don't think oil is a good idea, use bearing grease or similar.
Usually you need to remove the sticky label off the fan to get to the bearings.
I've done this with system vent fans and its been fine.

my fan bearings were goosed on my TNT2, just change the fan, about £3 form RS components.
