in the olden days, before there were cars, there was a game called MUD (written by Richard Bartle, first ran on an old VAX or summink in the University of Essex).

This game had a command called quit and it was abbreviated to "q" (for yea, did the parser support an mighty function, and the people saw it, and yea the people saw that it was good)

There was a more powerful form of the command called "superquit" which was abbreviated to "qq". I always thought qq was a fancy way of asking someone to quit the game :)

an a side note, anyone offer a translation of the following (you can win a cookie!)

n.ql.s.n.feed mo f coal.s

for a second cookie tell me which "mo" I am referring to ;)

I wouldn't say that MUD in itself is a game.. but Richard bartle did indead write the _first_ MUD.

MUD stands for Multi User Dungeon, so if you see it that way quake is a MUD aswell.. but normally you think of those textbased traditional ones.

It's like daoc really, but in text :p And alot of those muds are alot deeper than daoc will ever be, the hardcore roleplayers should really try out "Genesis", great roleplaying mud, but might lack when it comes to some gameplay issues.

The l33t levellers should try "Aardwolf" or a simular ROM-mud. It's a huuuuuge semi-pk mud with some insanely active players, know of some that have played 10 hours a day for like 7 years :p

Then there is pure PvP-muds that is great for those who like that.

Don't be scared of the complex interface, you'll learn fast enough ;> Just download Zmud and try it out, it's way more fun than it looks.

PS. Punchy is sexy

Random guessage from my short and uneventful experience of playing MUDs

Move North, Quick look, Move South, Move North, feed (obvious), mo (some npc), f (dunno), coal (that black stuff you can burn), Move South

I'm assuming the .'s you put in were separating different commands

Gifv cookie for trying?

Richard Bartle also wrote MUD2 if I recall which ended up being hosted on BT Wireplay for FREE! (I wasted sooooooooo many dial-up hours on it ;))

if you get caught using zmud's macro features on some servers be prepared to have a wiz "force" you into some evil things.

p.s. gifv c6 umi :p
