I've recently started swimming again after a break of about three years... I never used to swim "seriously" as it were, just a few lengths....

anyway, i swim in a leisure pool, which has 25m lanes, the swimming sessions at the moment, due to it being peak time, are an hour each... depending on what time i get my ass in the pool, i'll catch 1 or 2 sessions of the wave machine, said sessions last between 5-10 mins, depending on the mood of whoever is flicking the switch...

at the moment, after swimming for a couple of weeks, i'm swimming 40 lengths, ie 40*25m = 1km [breast-stroke]

i'm currently managing it in just under the hour, with a couple of mins break, and a complete break in any wave sessions....

what exactly IS a good time to manage this in? i kno i'm gonna get a bit faster and stuff, but it'd be nice to know how well i am doing...

swimming is about the only sport i've really excelled at.

it depends on how strong you arms are really and how many lengths your want to complete.

e.g. i can swim about 20 or so lengths if i take it easy but if I'm racing along I can only do about 4 before i need a rest (i dont breathe as much as i normally do if I'm racing)

summo - eh?

erm, my arms are pretty weedy... i assume they're gonna get stronger tho...

and lung capacity is non-existant...
saying that, the initial fuck i'm dying, help, heart attack imminent shit that was i was experiencing a couple of weeks ago on swimming *2* lengths seems to be dissipating now....

say the wave machine hits in after 30 mins, i can more or less do 20 lengths in one go before it starts and the other 20 afterwards...

this is of course assuming that some 6 year old girl who's frantically paddling in an attempt not to drown doesn't kick me in the nuts / head / guts...

I hate swimming

Attempting to swim either frontcrawl or the butterfly one, generally results in me managing half a length before having to switch to breast-stroke. Back stroke kills my legs after 2 lengths.

The only stroke i can actually swim, is breast stroke, however that doesn't mean i would choose to go swimming over having eggs thrown at me repeatedly

I wouldn't :(

The problem with me swimming is that I can only swim decently on my back

I wouldn't mind swimming again but I don't want people seing my giant inflatable [stomach] :(

butterfly is a bastard.

front crawl i use my arms. not my legs. which does get tiring but you get used to it as your legs hardly did anything in the first place.

still trying to master the turn around

that is so. being as I start my new job tomorrow and thus gain 3 hours a day by not having to commute I'll be going back to my old regimen of swimming twice a week and going to the gym twice a week. tdc intends to become moderately `in shape` again :)

Nail your technique on breaststroke, and the main forward impetus is from the legs, the arm part is really for setting up the next power stroke from the legs.

Also if you're doing it to get fit, find a pool that has lanes and Adult only sessions, definately avoids the whole 6 year old, nuts/head/guts interface problems, unless of course you're into that....

I'm amazed we've not had any Breast stroking jokes yet..

Im a completely shite swimmer. But I can ride like the proverbial wind, and run pretty good too.

So I did a triathlon (olympic distance, 1600m swim, 40k ride, 10k run)

Last out the reservoir by loads, won the ride, 5th in the run (and overall)

I need to be able to swim0r better. :(

I used to swim seriously, 3 times a week for about an hour. MY best ever was 100 lengths in 1hr 5mins, a mix of breaststroke with a little crawl for variety. (a 25m pool the same)

Having said that 40 lengths after just a couple of weeks is good, I am so unfit now that it would take me ages to get back to that distance:(

well.

it's now a few days on... it's becoming pretty fucking easy now. not that strenuous at all. apart from the occasional choking and drowning cos some twat kicks you......

but then my activa card lets me use any of 4 other pools in swansea as well, so i think i'll look around as lane swimming in the one i go to is at waaaaay too inconvenient a time
