hi every1, i have had this thingy that is bugging me out for some time now. The thingy is a process called svchost.exe that takes up 50% of my cpu at some times. I've been reading a tiny bit about it, that says it is a process used by windows to controll certain processes. I have aprox 5 of theese svchost.exe in the processes window when i ctrl-alt-del, but it is only 1 of them that buggs out.

Needless to say this is kinda bugging me out. I am running windows xp home version with SP2 and all the latest updates from windows. I am also running the mod called Litestep and the other one called windowblinds, if that might be of interest? i cant remember if i got these problems when i installed the mod's.(litestep and windowblinds are both mod's that change the standard windows explorer ui, like blackbox geoskin etc).

I have tried with anti-spy software, anti-virus and format c, but still it seams useless. When i cancel the svchost.exe i et problems with my sound and with my ui.

Any1 else had this prob? any1 got a solution? :p

You've rebuilt the computer but it still uses 50% of your processor?

svchost.exe is a legit windows file that handles dll processes etc, if you've got all the lastest security patchs this shouldn't be a problem, but a virus was also released by that name that forces your PC to kee rebooting.

If you have alot of dll processes running in the background this could be the reason for this problem, when you rebuild, what were the readings like, i'd install one piece of software at a time and restart to see which one is causing this problem.

You've probley done all this but its worth a shot if you haven't

svchost is the windows process that manages the services run by XP You can see all these services by doing Start -> Run -> services.msc -> OK

Chances are one of them is using alot of resources on your box.

Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to go into task manager
Go to the [Processes] page
View -> Select Colums -> Tick "PID"
Find the SVCHOST using all your resources and note down its PID number

From a command prompt run "tasklist /svc" and match up the PID, youll see what services are running against that process.

Kinda do this stuff every day :) Im guessing its some kind of antivirus or spyware application thats scanning things but looking at the services run by the SVCHOST PID will confirm that.
