Subscriber steam content server

Putting the technical problems of getting this to work to one side for a moment.....

Im a tad annoyed with waiting for steam to patch and stuff (which is an accepted problem and i can live with it without resorting to flaming on steams forums) but had you thought of setting up a steam server for barrysworld / game.net subscribers ?

Would be damn handy, and you sure would attract customers... "Bored of waiting for steam to update? subscribe and get a non-strained server :)"

Just a thought

Its a fucking brilliant idea to be perfectly bloody honest :)

Not an expert but I would have thought any steam server would be under the control of Valve so charging an additional fee to access it when Valve already charge you probably wouldn't work.

Do Valve charge?

It maybe worth just getting in contact with Valve just to see what the various T&C are for providing a Steam Content server.

Although as Bif says, they may not like you charging for the use of it.

Since there is no basis to assume you can force the steam client to use a specific server (i.e. do you see a "use server X" dropdown) this is a pointless discussion.

There probably is or will be a way to chose which content server you connect to, in the same way you could change which WON server you authed with.

The above would be all you needed, if Vavle agreed to allow GAME to run a firewalled content server.

Tbh, I would have thought the people who run the steam servers would jump at the chance at large companies with 'phat' pipes offering to host servers. With the vast amount of people using steam its inevitable that there is going to be a severe lack of bandwidth.

Maybe steam will be looking for servers where they can control what content is available... we'll have to see if do, and if they do perhaps negiotate so the server is firewalled.

Just my 2 pence :p

//Edit - I haven't really looked into the steam malarky, but if they do start charging it doesn't really matter as people who use Steam would subscribe anyway. If you are a game.net subscriber, its a bonus!

//Edit 2 - Me being totally ignorant did some reading and it does look as though there are 'sponsors' running steam servers. http://steampowered.com/status.html

At present you give Valve a server and bandwidth to do with as they like to use as a steam content server. They give you a small banner ad on steam's connect and verification screen. What a pay-off!

There is no doubt that steam will go the "pay and get more stuff, faster access".

Otherwise why in gods name would they spend so much money developing it? Valve is after all a business.

I for one look forward to being able to buy games and DL them.

Cos I don't like "outside", that's where bears live.
