Stupid Ethnicity Questions

After filling in several jobs application forms, and university forms, I am becoming increasingly irritated by the options available in Ethnicity Questions. The questions generally have the first few options as:
* White British
* White Scottish
* White Irish
* White Other
.... (other races)

I want to know where "White English" is (or for that matter, the taffs can't put "White Welsh"). Why can the jocks put down scottish, but I can't say I'm english
I presume it's the belief that if you are "White English" you are racist, fucking political correctness.

Their habitat is awesome, these little guys have had to make tremendous adaptations to survive. They rarely spend money and they drink a lot of alcohol to keep free of germs.

Case study: Out in the cold

Paul was working as a deputy chief constable of a police authority in Scotland when he applied for a promotion with another force. Despite being well qualified for the post he was not selected for interview.

He found out that all those who had been short-listed were Scottish and that some of these applicants were less qualified than he was. He began to suspect that he had not been given the opportunity to go for the job because of his ethnic background, which was English. He came to the CRE for advice and assistance.

In response to our enquiries, the police authority denied the allegations of racial discrimination. They argued that legislation did not apply between Scottish and English people.

This question was settled at an employment appeal tribunal who stated that the 1976 Race Relations Act does apply between these groups. (This was confirmed at an appeal tribunal - and by the Scottish court of appeal in another case.)

The full case was due to be heard at an employment tribunal, but before the hearing the police authority accepted an out of court settlement. This agreement provided for an apology to be issued to Paul by the police authority, a four figure donation to be made to a charity of Paul's choice, and a meeting to be held between the CRE, ACAS, and the police authority to discuss the effectiveness of their equal opportunities procedure in relation to recruitment.

Names have been changed to protect the identity of our clients.

Under Scots law, it appears that the English are offered a degree of protection from the unfortunate discrimination which can be inflicted on them. I'm sure there is a similar case under English law, but I have been unable to find the link.

It's a load of bollocks, i'm seriously ashamed of my fellow Scots who consider their nationality to be "Scottish" as opposed to "British" - I have a British passport, not a Scottish passport.

Same for Blacks, Latino, Indian, Native American, etc. No one care what country you're from, if you're from Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, or even Israel, you're Arab. If you're from Nigeria, Congo, Mississippi, or Louisiana and your skin is dark brown, you're black. If you're from pretty much any European nation, you're white.

Over here, your racism is simplified.

US racial issues are really fucked up. It appears that the difference is that in the US, you can be killed because you're not white. The vast majority of racial crimes are committed by whites against people of color. It's rare to see a racially motivated crime perpetrated by someone of color. I know that Ireland has it's violence, but that's (according to our media, correct me if I'm wrong) more of a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants than anything else.

In some parts of the US, some whites don't even hide their hatred of people of color. I've been called a "******" or "Half Breed" to my face by old white men while travelling through Texas (I'm black and native american - Quechan Tribal Member to be exact). When I lived in Ann Arbor, Mi the Ku Klux Klan made it a point to have a hate rally once a year there. Once, a riot broke out over it.

Racial profiling here means getting pulled over by the cops simply because you're black or latino and in the "wrong" neighborhood. I've had my ass beat by cops for crap like that as have most of my friends from my younger years.

Basically, you guys have it easy over there if all you have to worry about is profiling due to national origin.

The thing that bothers me is that this is supposedly to promote equal rights. If that is true why do they need to know what racial origin you come from? If everyone is going to be equal and everyone is going to be the same then there should be no use at all for this data, hence no reason to gather it?

The data is used to monitor how many applications from each ethnic group there are, and then to compare it to the successful applications. So if you are hiring along ethnic grounds, it would be obvious.
